Elon Musk is expanding the boundaries into artificial-intelligence (AI) hardware with Terafab, an ambitious semiconductor project, which is particularly designed to produce chips for xAI, SpaceX and Tesla.
The plan is once again under discussion after Musk confirmed Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) is in talks regarding potential partnership, although no deal has been finalised yet.
1. Terafab is Musk's giant chipmaking bet
Terafab is planned as a massive semiconductor manufacturing facility in Texas.
As per Texas officials, the first phase represents an investment of over $16.8 billion and is likely to generate around 3,000 jobs.
2. Musk wants chips for his AI ambitions
The project is closely tied to Musk's growing AI plans. Chips produced via Terafab are likely to be integrated in computing, robotics and autonomous vehicles, assisting firms to secure more of the hardware they need.
3. Tesla and SpaceX are central to the project
Terafab doesn't only aim to serve just one business. Musk has highlighted plans for chips aimed at Tesla vehicles and Optimus robots, alongside hardware for SpaceX and AI-related computing infrastructure.
4. TSMC could play a major role
Musk has confirmed discussions with TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker.
A report suggested the companies are considering how TSMC could participate in the Texas project; however, the exact role remains undisclosed.
5. It could transform Musk's tech empire
Terafab is said to be a reflection of Musk's wider strategy to control more of the AI supply chain, from chips and computing infrastructure to robots and autonomous technology.
If successful, the project could reduce his companies' dependence on outside semiconductor suppliers while supporting their expanding AI ambitions.
