One evening in Sukkur, a university student returned to her hostel after a difficult day. Someone had been sending her disturbing messages, but she could not gather the courage to tell her parents. Although she knew they loved her, she feared being misunderstood or blamed. So, she chose silence over sharing her pain. This reflects a communication gap that often exists between parents and children. Many parents fulfil their responsibilities by providing education, food, shelter and financial support. However, meeting material needs does not always create emotional closeness. Children also need a friendly environment where they can share their fears and personal struggles without being judged. Today, many teenagers and young adults face challenges such as harassment, anxiety and emotional distress. Yet, the fear of criticism or not being believed often prevents them from seeking help. When harassment comes from someone they know, speaking up can become even more difficult. Hiding these experiences may deepen their distress and leave them feeling isolated. Parents must understand that when a child says 'I'm fine', everything may not actually be fine. Sometimes, silence reflects a fear of their reaction. Listening patiently, responding calmly and avoiding blame can encourage children to speak honestly. Schools and universities should also provide safe spaces where young people can seek support. Providing for children is essential, but emotional support matters just as much. A healthy parent-child relationship is built not only on responsibility and authority, but also on trust, understanding and open communication. Sometimes, children do not need more advice or stricter rules; they need to know that home is a place where they can share their pain without fear. Samina Maryam Sukkur
