Pakistan recover from two-goal deficit to hold Philippines

Pakistan came from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw against the Philippines in the FIFA ASEAN Cup, earning their first point of the tournament in Indonesia. The Shaheens entered the match looking to recover from a 4-0 defeat to Thailand in their Group B opener but found themselves under pressure early on. Goalkeeper Yousuf Butt produced an important save to deny Andre Leipold in a one-on-one situation before the Philippines eventually took the lead in the 24th minute. The Philippines doubled their advantage shortly after the half-hour mark when Mohammad Fazal was penalised for handball inside the box. Bjorn Kristensen converted the resulting penalty to give his side a 2-0 lead at half-time. Pakistan head coach Nolberto Solano made two changes at the interval, bringing on Ali Agha and Hayyan Khattak as his side looked for a response. The changes had an immediate impact, with Pakistan pulling one back just two minutes after the restart. Ali Akbar collected Abdullah Iqbal's pass on the left, beat his marker and finished through Mendoza's legs to score his first international goal. Pakistan continued to push forward and eventually found the equaliser through Abdul Samad Arshad. Samad won possession on the right, drove into the penalty area, cut inside and fired past Mendoza to complete the comeback. Solano also handed international debuts to Abdul Rehman and Abdul Samad Khan as Pakistan searched for a late winner. The Philippines remained dangerous on the counterattack, but Mohibullah made an important defensive block to prevent them from regaining the lead. Pakistan continued pressing until the final whistle but were unable to find a third goal, settling for a 2-2 draw after an impressive second-half recovery.
