US launches America.gov, an AI chatbot for navigating federal services The US government has launched America.gov, an AI-powered portal built with Google as a technology partner, designed to cut through the sprawl of federal websites by pulling information from more than 29,000 official sources into a single, conversational interface. America.gov does not work like a typical directory but rather works like a chatbot. Users can enter or say their question in natural language and get their answers immediately, instead of going to individual agency websites to find answers to their question. The website states its mission as making the government site search process easier for citizens. The tool covers questions about benefits, programmes, forms, fees, deadlines, and eligibility criteria. Asking about a passport renewal, for instance, returns relevant details along with source citations, similar to how a Gemini-style AI assistant would respond. Users have the capacity to rate the answers provided to them, duplicate the response, and ask for more detailed information regarding a particular subject. For example, in the case of Social Security retirement benefits, the software can help identify the minimum age at which one is eligible to file for the same, if there are online filing options available, and the necessary documentation that should be submitted in this regard. America.gov also provides its users the facility to upload any PDF document that they might have received from the federal government and ask questions on it. Users can also ask their queries through the voice option available in English, Spanish, and French languages. At launch, America.gov is limited strictly to providing information. It can walk users through what an application requires but cannot yet process forms, submit applications, or handle renewals on their behalf.
