A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck Uttarakhand's Chamoli district on Tuesday night, October 6, sending tremors across Delhi-NCR and several other parts of northern India. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) recorded the earthquake at 10:23 p.m. IST, at a depth of 13 kilometres. Its epicentre was around 50 kilometres south of Joshimath, according to Hindustan Times. Residents in Delhi, Noida and Gurugram reported brief shaking. Tremors were also felt in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana, with people sharing accounts online from places including Shimla. For several minutes, social media became a place for residents to check whether others had noticed the movement. People posted about what they had felt and asked if an earthquake had struck, while official details were still awaited. NDTV reported that confirmation from the NCS came at around 10:40 p.m., roughly 17 minutes after the time recorded in the agency's bulletin. The update identified Chamoli as the location and confirmed that the quake measured 4.9. Early reports had put the magnitude at 4.4. India Today later updated its report to reflect the NCS figure of 4.9, describing an earthquake of that size as light. The agency's bulletin placed the epicentre at latitude 30.103 degrees north and longitude 79.561 degrees east. Although the earthquake originated in Uttarakhand, reports of shaking extended across several northern states and the national capital region. The evening earthquake followed another recorded in Assam earlier on Tuesday. A magnitude 4.5 quake hit Nagaon district at 4:23 a.m. IST, according to NCS information cited by Hindustan Times. That earthquake occurred at a depth of 33 kilometres, with its epicentre at latitude 26.428 degrees north and longitude 93.060 degrees east. A smaller earthquake had also been recorded in Himachal Pradesh's Una late on Sunday, October 4. The magnitude 2.5 quake struck at about 11:48 p.m. IST, according to an NCS bulletin reproduced by Hindustan Times. The Una earthquake was recorded at a depth of nine kilometres. Its epicentre was located at latitude 31.618 degrees north and longitude 76.301 degrees east, according to the agency's figures.
