(Photo credit: Eric Bolte) Joao Fonseca of Brazil announced Saturday that he won't play again in 2026 due to injury. Fonseca, 20, did not disclose the specific injury but missed the U.S. Open in August due to an abdominal injury. 'Hey everyone, just dropping by to update you on the rest of the season,' Fonseca said in an Instagram video. 'As you saw, I skipped the Asian swing to focus on my recovery. My plan was to return during the European swing. But after talking with my team, I realized I'm still not 100% ready to compete at the level I'd like. 'And there is no need to rush things. So, we decided to prioritize my health and put all focus on the 2027 season. Thank you so much for the support and love always. See you all on the court soon.' Fonseca will miss the Swiss Indoors Basel and Rolex Paris Masters. He is the defending champion in Basel, an ATP 500-level event. Fonseca last played in September, when he represented Brazil in the Davis Cup. In August, Fonseca withdrew before a third-round match against Christopher O'Connell at the Cincinnati Open due to the abdominal ailment that led to his withdrawal from the U.S. Open. He also dealt with right wrist, right shoulder and back ailments during the year. Fonseca, ranked No. 29, went 20-13 this season and reached the quarterfinals of the French Open. Fonseca has won two career ATP singles titles. --Field Level Media Joao Fonseca of Brazil announced Saturday that he won't play again in 2026 due to injury.
