At the time of independence in 1947, Pakistan's population stood at approximately 32 million. Over the decades, the country has witnessed exponential demographic growth driven by high fertility rates, limited awareness of family planning and sociocultural factors that favour large families. This rapid expansion is alarming because it consistently outpaces economic development, strains public infrastructure and overwhelms social services. The economic consequences of this population explosion are profound. The labour force expands far quicker than job creation, leaving millions unemployed or underemployed. Consequently, poverty deepens as resources and opportunities remain scarce, while an surging demand for goods and services drives inflation, escalating the cost of food, housing and healthcare. Simultaneously, the state struggles to deliver even basic public utilities. The social and political ramifications are equally critical. Widespread unemployment and poverty fuel rising crime rates, substance abuse and societal unrest. Furthermore, large family sizes frequently restrict women's access to education and employment, while a growing youth population — destined to be an asset — risks becoming a volatile liability without viable opportunities. Ultimately, Pakistan's population surge is a multifaceted crisis that degrades the economy, education, healthcare and the environment. To secure its future, Pakistan must curb this unsustainable growth through comprehensive education, accessible healthcare and robust family planning campaigns. If managed wisely through proactive governance, the country can transform its demographic crisis into an economic opportunity; if neglected, the consequences will be dire. Syed Asif Shah Mastung
