LONDON – Britain's King Charles III has welcomed Omani Sultan Haitham bin Tariq on a state visit to the United Kingdom, marking the first visit of an Omani ruler to the country in 44 years.
During the reception, King Charles highlighted the longstanding ties between Britain and Oman, praising the Omani people for their good character and recalling a Hadith from the Islamic tradition.
In his address, the British monarch recited a Hadith in Arabic from Sahih Muslim, referring to Holy Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) words about the people of Oman.
The Hadith conveys the meaning that if people went to the Omanis, they would neither be insulted nor physically harmed. King Charles's reference to the Islamic tradition underscored the historical reputation of Omanis for their hospitality, kindness and peaceful conduct.
The royal reception formed part of Sultan Haitham's official state visit, which is expected to provide an opportunity for the two countries to strengthen their longstanding diplomatic and economic relations.
King Charles also praised Oman's diplomatic efforts to promote peace and stability in the Middle East. He particularly acknowledged the country's role in efforts to reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a vital international shipping route for global energy supplies.
Oman has historically maintained diplomatic relations with various regional and international players, positioning itself as a facilitator of dialogue during periods of heightened tension in the Middle East.
The Strait of Hormuz, located between Oman and Iran, is one of the world's most important maritime chokepoints, with a substantial share of global oil shipments passing through the waterway. Any disruption to shipping through the strait can have significant consequences for international energy markets and trade.
Sultan Haitham's visit comes as regional tensions and security concerns continue to highlight the importance of diplomatic engagement.
The visit also reflected the enduring relationship between the United Kingdom and Oman, which have maintained close ties in areas including trade, security and regional cooperation.
The previous state visit by an Omani ruler to Britain took place 44 years ago, making Sultan Haitham's visit a significant occasion in relations between the two countries.
