Breaking Bad star Bob Odenkirk has paid tribute to his late co-star RJ Mitte following the actor's death at the age of 34.
In a statement to PEOPLE on October 13, Odenkirk remembered Mitte as a kind person who used his personal experiences to support others. The actor, who portrayed Saul Goodman in the AMC crime drama, praised Mitte for his positivity and willingness to connect with people.
'Whenever I saw him, he was meeting the world with positivity and a strong desire to connect,' Odenkirk said. 'This is simply, deeply sad.'
Mitte, best known for playing Walter 'Flynn' White Jr., the son of Bryan Cranston's character, Walter White, throughout all five seasons of Breaking Bad, died on October 12. His representative confirmed the news to PEOPLE and said his death was by suicide.
Beyond his acting career, Mitte was a prominent disability rights advocate. Born with cerebral palsy, he used his public platform to raise awareness about disability representation and inclusion in the entertainment industry.
His representative also highlighted his work as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children's, alongside his role as president of The Mitte Foundation.
Odenkirk's tribute followed emotional messages from other Breaking Bad cast members, including Bryan Cranston and Dean Norris.
Cranston, who played Mitte's on-screen father, remembered meeting the actor when he was 14 and praised his determination throughout the series. He described Mitte as his 'sweet son on Breaking Bad' and expressed sorrow over his death.
Cranston also revealed that he and Mitte had exchanged text messages weeks earlier and had tried to arrange lunch. Reflecting on their relationship, he wrote that he loved the young actor and would miss him.
Norris, who portrayed Hank Schrader, also mourned Mitte, describing him as a sweetheart and remembering how he looked out for him when he was young.
Mitte's death has prompted tributes from his former co-stars and renewed attention to his contributions to disability awareness and representation on television.
