Some poetry is remembered for the beauty of its language; some stays with us because it seems to speak from a place we ourselves have known but never managed to describe. The most affecting verse often does not depend on complexity. Its strength lies in the honesty with which it gives shape to pain, mistrust, separation and the quiet reckoning that time eventually brings. There is a particular force in poetry that captures the helplessness of being carried by circumstances beyond one's control. The idea that life, fate, or even those closest to us can make decisions on our behalf without asking us is deeply unsettling. It touches a universal human fear: that our own story may continue to unfold while we remain only partly in command of it. When a poet expresses such a feeling with restraint rather than exaggeration, the result is not merely emotional; it becomes reflective. The ache of separation also acquires greater depth when it is presented not as a dramatic rupture, but as something that gradually settles into memory. People leave, trust weakens, relationships change, and time quietly keeps its own account. Poetry becomes a space where these losses can be revisited without being reduced to complaint. It transforms personal hurt into something larger and more recognizable. That is perhaps the finest quality of such verse: it allows private feeling to become shared experience. A line written out of one person's sorrow may suddenly make another reader stop and think, 'I have felt this too.' At that moment, poetry performs one of its oldest and most beautiful functions—it gives language to what the heart has long carried in silence. The mark of a sensitive poet is therefore not only the ability to write elegantly, but to make the reader pause. When every line opens a small chamber of reflection, poetry ceases to be ornament and becomes insight. It reminds us that words, when chosen with truth and tenderness, can sometimes understand us before we fully understand ourselves. Dr Intikhab Ulfat Karachi
