By KARACHI: The Sindh government has prepared to strengthen its climate response through improved access to climate finance, research partnerships with public-sector universities and enhanced interdepartmental coordination. ?It prepares to convene the first meeting of its Task Force on Climate Change and advance a provincial Water, Food and Energy (WEF) Nexus Platform. ?The initiatives will be taken up on Thursday at a local hotel, where the Environment, Climate Change and Coastal Development Department will hold a training session on the WEF Nexus Country Platform, sign two memoranda of understanding with public-sector universities and convene the inaugural meeting of the climate change taskforce. ?Supported by the Islamic Development Bank, the training session will focus on the platform's features, provincial climate project portfolios, improved project visibility and opportunities for mobilising finance. The session will also involve the NDC Partnership team from Islamabad. ?The MoUs, to be signed in the presence of Sindh Chief Minister's Adviser on Environment, Climate Change and Coastal Development Dost Muhammad Rahimoon, will establish institutional partnerships to advance climate research, environmental protection and sustainability. Under the first agreement, the provincial department and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University, Shaheed Benazirabad, will collaborate on research, education, policy support, capacity building, technology transfer and public outreach, with a focus on climate change, biodiversity, sustainable agriculture, ecosystem management and afforestation using native species. The second MoU, with the Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability Center (CCESC) at Benazir Bhutto Shaheed University of Technology and Skill Development, Khairpur Mirs, will promote joint research, knowledge sharing and collaborative initiatives in climate change and environmental sustainability. ?The first meeting of the Task Force on Climate Change will focus on climate governance and policy, sector-specific climate action, data monitoring, implementation mechanisms, legal and institutional reforms, climate finance and coordination among government departments. ?The initiatives are expected to strengthen collaboration between government institutions and academia, improve the development and visibility of provincial climate projects, and build institutional capacity to support a greener and more climate-resilient Sindh.
