LOI Premier Division Shamrock Rovers 3 - 1 Drogheda United On a wet and wild night in Tallaght, Shamrock Rovers made sure they didn't lose ground in the title race as they hit three first-half goals past Drogheda to return to the top of the table. The slip-up that title rivals St Patrick's Athletic and Bohemians were hoping to see from the champions didn't come, as Stephen Bradley's side produced a dominant display to keep their own title ambitions on track. They are now three points clear at the summit with four games remaining. Graham Burke gave the leaders a dream start in sensational fashion, with his opener after just 34 seconds the fastest Rovers goal in the Tallaght era. John McGovern then added a brace before the break as the Hoops eased to a victory which extends their unbeaten run over Drogs to 15 matches. But, more importantly, it keeps Rovers' title fate in their own hands. With a mouth-watering derby at home to Bohs to come on Monday, 10 points from their final four games would secure a sixth title in seven seasons for Bradley's men. For the visitors, it was a miserable night as they remain in ninth, level on 34 points with eighth-placed Waterford but with a game more played. The clash between the pair in a fortnight will be pivotal in the fight to avoid the relegation play-off. After almost three weeks without a league game, Rovers wasted little time in making their mark as Burke broke the deadlock. Before kick-off, one wondered how much of an impact the driving wind and the rain would have on proceedings. The result was instant, as Drogheda assistant Daire Doyle – with boss Kevin Doherty suspended – watched not one, but two of his players slip to gift the hosts an opener. However, Andrew Quinn also slipped on the wet surface which offered Burke a free run on goal. The former Ireland international coolly slotted into the bottom corner for his ninth league goal of 2026. For the first time in almost a month, the Hoops had returned to the summit of the 'as it stands' table. That didn't stop the Shamrock Rovers fans unfurling a banner criticizing the FAI board for fulfilling the two Israel international fixtures. 'Your cowardice will never be forgotten. Horrible, shameless and unfit for the job,' it read. On the pitch, Drogheda were struggling to live with Rovers' intensity as McGovern saw his effort heroically blocked by Keeley on 19 minutes. Quinn challenged the former Down GAA star inside the box moments later, but referee Kevin O'Sullivan decided it was not a penalty. The home bench were incensed, but things cooled just 60 seconds later as Rovers doubled their lead. Drogheda only had themselves to blame. Pico Lopes' clever pass split the visiting defence wide open but it was just overhit and looked easy for Fynn Talley to collect. However, he parried the ball on the slippery surface and pushed it straight into McGovern's path. The former Northern Ireland U-21 gratefully accepted the chance and slotted home to strengthen Rovers' advantage. It was a perfect start for the champions, but they didn't stop there. At the end of a half that was one-way traffic, McGovern bagged his second after Jake Mulraney's cross found Tunmise Sobowale, who was allowed far too much time to lay it back to the striker. The 23-year-old, who was such a loss when he was injured for most of Rovers' European campaign, netted his fourth in two games and ninth overall in the league. Game, set and match. The ball struck the post and came back off McGinty; the Hoops 'keeper was relieved to see the rebound roll just wide. That was as close as the Louth side came to pulling one back until the dying minutes, when Brandon Kavanagh finished superbly after a well-worked short-corner routine. Minutes before, substitute Aaron Greene missed a golden chance to add a fourth but like Drogheda's late consolation, it didn't matter. The Hoops had settled this contest long before.
