God Speaks Where You Are

Ram Dass wrote, 'We are patterns of energy. We are a dance, a play. We are God in drag.' I laughed out loud the first time I read that. Then I read it again. We tend to look for God somewhere else. On a mountain. In a service. In the quiet hour we never quite get to. Somewhere better than here. Ram Dass says that's the joke. God isn't somewhere else. God is showing up as everything. Including this. The person ahead of you in line. The kid who won't put on shoes. The friend who calls at the wrong time. The tired face in the mirror. A dance. A play. And every part is being played by the same One. Which means God doesn't wait for you to get somewhere holy. God speaks to you where you are. In the language of your actual life. A kind word at the pharmacy. A song on the radio at the exact right moment. The quiet after the dishes. Most of the time, we miss it. Not because it isn't there. Because we're looking past it, toward somewhere more spiritual. So today, don't go looking. Just notice. The next person you see, the next ordinary moment, ask quietly: What are you saying to me?
