Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has selected renowned fashion designer Hassan Sheheryar Yasin, popularly known as HSY, to create its new cabin crew uniforms. The airline plans to introduce the designs on October 31.
PIA announced the development on Thursday. The new uniforms will make their debut during the inaugural London-to-Islamabad flight of the airline's newly acquired Dreamliner aircraft. The launch marks a new chapter in the national carrier's uniform design history.
According to a PIA press release, the uniforms combine breathable fabrics with structured tailoring. The designs focus on durability, making them suitable for demanding long-haul flights. They also aim to provide cabin crew members with greater comfort and freedom of movement while performing their duties.
The airline selected HSY's designs after a fashion showcase held in Karachi. The event featured collections from several leading Pakistani designers and fashion brands. Participants included Maheen Khan, Deepak and Fahad, Generation, Ismail Farid, Munib Nawaz, Deepak Perwani, Faraz Manan, Amir Adnan and Nomi Ansari.
PIA had used Nomi Ansari's designs for its uniforms over the past 12 years. The latest selection followed a review of the participating designers' collections. A panel of five judges evaluated the designs before HSY was selected for the project.
The judging panel included Shamoon Sultan, founder and chief executive of Khaadi. It also featured couturier Nilofer Shahid and beauty and style expert Nabila. Hina Tayyaba Khalil, vice-chancellor of the Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design, also served on the panel. Naseem Tehrani, a PIA veteran with 33 years of aviation experience, completed the judging team.
HSY joins a distinguished group of designers who have contributed to PIA's uniform history. French designer Pierre Cardin created the airline's A-line tunic and hood in 1966. British designer Sir Hardy Amies, who served as Queen Elizabeth II's royal couturier, also contributed to PIA's uniform designs during the 1970s.
Speaking about the project, Yasin said designing for the national airline carried special significance. He described the assignment as an opportunity to represent Pakistan's pride and hospitality.
The designer added that he wanted cabin crew members to feel exceptionally confident and comfortable in their uniforms. He also emphasised the importance of respecting Pakistani heritage while incorporating modern fashion elements.
According to Yasin, the designs aim to communicate Pakistan's identity at airports around the world. The new cabin crew uniforms are intended to combine practical requirements with cultural representation.
