The customer ahead of you holds a phone against a small reader, and the terminal beeps. The next customer opens an app and shows a square barcode for the cashier to scan. Both are making mobile payments in Hong Kong, using different technology and possibly different sources of money. Before your first payment, check where the money comes from, which payment methods the shop accepts and whether any charges apply. What is an e-wallet? An e-wallet is software, usually a phone app, that lets you make electronic payments using a stored balance or a linked card or bank account. In Hong Kong, the HKMA licenses and supervises stored-value facilities, including relevant e-wallets and prepaid cards. Stored balance versus linked payment method. Octopus on iPhone or Apple Watch is a stored-value example: you add money before spending it. The Adult and Elder versions require a HK$50 refundable deposit and have a HK$3,000 stored-value limit. For card payments through Apple Pay, add a supported debit or credit card to the Wallet app, and purchases will be charged to that card. Some apps, including AlipayHK, support both a balance and linked cards or bank accounts. Check which funding source you've selected before paying. Scan versus tap. QR codes and contactless readers send payment instructions differently. A QR code is a scannable square barcode. At checkout, you either show a payment code on your screen for the cashier to scan or scan the merchant's code and, if prompted, enter the amount. AlipayHK's payment instructions cover both methods. Tapping uses NFC (near-field communication), a short-range wireless link between your phone and a contactless reader. Where FPS fits. FPS (the Faster Payment System) connects banks and stored-value facility operators. You access it through a participating bank or wallet. It operates around the clock and supports Hong Kong dollar and renminbi payments, though that operating schedule doesn't guarantee that every transaction completes instantly. Mobile payments in Hong Kong: making your first payment Choose around your routine. Start with what you pay for most. Mobile Octopus supports tap payments for transport and retail purchases. Apple Pay lets you pay with a supported bank card on a compatible device. PayMe lets you pay friends and participating businesses by scanning their PayCode. WeChat Pay HK is a Hong Kong-dollar wallet for WeChat users in Hong Kong; don't assume it works interchangeably with a mainland Weixin Pay account. AlipayHK's e wallet is one commercial option for utility and government bill payments and purchases at participating merchants in Hong Kong. It names the Chinese mainland, Japan and Singapore among its cross-border payment destinations. Check whether your biller or merchant and chosen funding method are supported before paying. Set up the right funding method. Install the provider's official app or use the wallet built into your phone, then follow its registration and identity-verification prompts. Review your account's payment and balance limits. Next, choose a funding source: top up a balance or link a supported card or bank account. The HKMA advises reading the terms and conditions before using a payment app. Check the cost. Shopping, transfers and bill payments can carry different charges within the same app. AlipayHK's fee FAQ, for example, sets a handling fee for certain Visa and Mastercard merchant payments after you exceed a monthly fee-free threshold. Designated Hong Kong-issued cards and several other payment methods are exempt, while bill payments and transfers have separate charging arrangements. Check the rules for the funding source and transaction type you plan to use. Protect the account. Turn on your phone's screen lock and the app's authentication. Apple Pay uses a device-specific number and a unique transaction code for purchases; other wallets use their own security methods. AlipayHK advises users not to make transactions or share personal details through unfamiliar or suspicious websites, text messages or apps. Scanning a QR code can still require you to authorise a payment: government bill payments through the supported FPS QR process require authentication in your app. Make and check the payment. At the counter, look for your wallet's logo. If the merchant displays a supported QR code, scan it. If the cashier asks for your payment code, show it. For a contactless payment, follow your device's prompts and hold it near the reader. Check the amount and funding source, and review the recipient name where shown, before authorising payment. Afterwards, check the transaction record rather than assuming the scan or tap succeeded. Since 1 April 2026, taxi drivers must offer at least two electronic payment methods, including one QR and one non-QR option. Drivers choose which methods they offer, so check the window sticker or ask before boarding. Keep a second payment method with you in case your preferred wallet isn't accepted. FAQ Will one wallet work everywhere? No. Merchant participation differs, so a wallet accepted at one shop may not be accepted next door. Check for your wallet's logo or ask before ordering. A provider's list of supported overseas destinations also indicates availability at participating merchants, not every shop in those places. Do I need an internet connection to pay? It depends on the wallet and the task. Octopus on iPhone and Apple Watch doesn't need an internet connection for transport and retail payments. Adding a new Octopus or starting a transfer from Octopus Wallet does require one. Check your provider's help pages before relying on offline payments. Can you use a Hong Kong e-wallet overseas? Some can, at supported destinations and participating merchants. AlipayHK, for example, names the Chinese mainland, Japan and Singapore among its cross-border payment destinations. Paying an overseas shop and sending money to someone overseas are separate services with their own conditions. Before travelling, check which merchants accept the service, which funding methods it supports, and the applicable charges.
