Elusive hockey gold

. Pakistan has not won a hockey gold medal at the Asian Games since 2010, and their 4 / 3 semifinal loss to arch-rivals India yesterday ensures that the drought will persist through the ongoing Nagoya Games. The Green Shirts put up a spirited fight after conceding three goals in the first 23 minutes. They leveled the score by the 49th minute, raising hopes of a comeback or at least pushing the game into a penalty shootout. While the match remained finely balanced for the next 10 minutes, it ultimately tilted in India's favour with just seconds left before the final hooter. To add to the embarrassment, the result extended India's unbeaten run against Pakistan to 21 matches. With a spot in the final gone, the Green Shirts are now left fighting South Korea (who were defeated by Malaysia in the other semifinal) for the bronze medal - a podium position they have miserably failed to secure at the Asian Games since the 2006 Doha Games. This current slump stands in stark contrast to the country's glorious past. A total of 14 Asiad medals – 8 gold, 3 silver, and 3 bronze – still makes Pakistan the most successful men's field hockey nation in the tournament's history. Pakistan's decades-long slump remains a frustrating enigma. A nation that ruled the sport globally through the 1960s, 70s and mid-80s now routinely struggles to beat lower-ranked teams. Remarkably, this decline has persisted despite the team being guided by some of the greatest legends and elite tactical coaches in hockey history. This proves that the root issue is systemic. To reverse this slide, the PHF must abandon short-term fixes and focus entirely on reviving structural infrastructure. Re-establishing robust grassroots hockey, introducing a commercially sustainable franchise league to provide financial security for players, and building modern sporting facilities at the local level are the ways to pull the national game back from total obscurity.
