Viral footage circulating online appears to show sealed iPhone boxes and luxury perfume packs floating in the Strait of Hormuz after a container ship was struck, caught fire and sank this week, turning a shipping attack into an unlikely consumer-tech story. The Singapore-flagged vessel GFS Pride went down near Oman's Musandam peninsula after what Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority described as an unknown projectile strike that damaged the ship and started a fire. All 21 crew members were evacuated and no injuries were reported. Clips shared widely on social media appear to show Apple iPhone boxes and perfume packs bobbing in the water, with small boats moving among scattered containers. Major outlets that carried the footage, including India Today, said they could not independently verify where or when the clips were filmed, or confirm that the phones were part of the ship's cargo. AI-generated images claiming to show thousands of iPhones in the water were also shared around the same time. What Officials Say Happened Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said a ship hit a naval mine while using what it called an unauthorised route through the strait. Singapore and other maritime reports said the vessel was hit by an unidentified projectile. A second Singapore-flagged ship, GFS Giselle, was also hit around the same period, suffered hull damage, and reached a safe anchorage with its crew. Pakistan's Hydrographer warned mariners that GFS Pride had sunk about four nautical miles north-west of Ras al-Sheikh Masud. The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency reported multiple projectile strikes on commercial vessels in the strait this week. Why The Strait Matters The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil and gas trade. Shipping there has faced repeated attacks since the wider Iran conflict began earlier this year, and the waterway has at times been effectively closed or tightly restricted. The viral iPhone clips do not change the maritime facts: a freighter sank, its crew survived, and commercial traffic through one of the world's most important sea lanes remains under threat.
