. Canadian poet Anne Carson wins Nobel Literature Prize Canadian poet and writer Anne Carson, whose unconventional work blends poetry, prose, dialogue and translation, won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday for what the Swedish Academy described as her "bold and inventive oeuvre". The 76-year-old laureate, born in Toronto and now an Icelandic citizen, was in Iceland when she received the news. Asked how she felt about winning, she told Icelandic broadcaster RUV: "Crazy, I think they're all crazy." She added: "I'll get a sticker on the front of my book." The prize, awarded by the Swedish Academy, is worth 12 million Swedish kronor ($1.2 million). The academy praised Carson for creating new forms of contemporary literature through a playful dialogue with classical traditions. Widely recognised for her translations of classical Greek literature, Carson has written across genres, from literary criticism and opera libretti to verse novels. Her 1998 work 'Autobiography of Red', often regarded as her finest achievement, reimagines classical literature to explore love, desire and destruction. Her 2019 performance piece 'Norma Jeane Baker of Troy' combines the story of Helen of Troy from Euripides' play 'Helen' with the life of Marilyn Monroe, reflecting her distinctive approach to literary traditions.
