Punjab Launches Rs. 16 Billion Safe City Expansion With 10,000 New Cameras

Punjab has launched a Rs. 16 billion Safe City expansion project aimed at strengthening digital surveillance and improving security monitoring across 98 tehsils in the province. Under the new project, around 10,000 additional surveillance cameras will be installed at key locations, expanding the reach of Punjab's technology-based monitoring network. The upgraded system will also incorporate artificial intelligence tools to support facial recognition, vehicle number plate detection, crime analysis and traffic management. The initiative is designed to provide law enforcement agencies with faster access to digital information and improve their ability to monitor public spaces, identify suspicious activity and respond to security and traffic-related incidents. The expansion builds on Punjab's existing Safe City infrastructure, which is already operational in nearly 40 cities across the province. Authorities are now seeking to extend the system to more urban and semi-urban areas, creating a broader technology-enabled security network across Punjab.
