For Karachi's residents, a dry tap often means an additional household expense. When public supply fails, families must seek alternative sources, sometimes at prices they can barely afford. There is no dearth of media reports documenting the city's worsening water crisis, with residents waiting days for tankers and private tanker prices rising sharply during the shortage. Such dependence makes unreliable water supply an economic burden. The authorities have announced plans to reduce reliance on hydrants and tankers by improving direct pipeline supply. However, residents need transparent evidence of progress, not announcements alone. The KWSC should publish current tanker tariffs, booking waiting times, authorised hydrant records and areawise supply data. It should also explain how complaints of overcharging and failed deliveries are investigated, and report whether promised pipeline improvements have reached underserved communities. Increasing the city's water supply is essential, but it will not be enough unless the distribution system works fairly. Residents should not have to pay repeatedly for a basic necessity that the public system is supposed to provide. Karachi needs a water policy measured by what reaches households, how reliably it arrives and whether ordinary families can afford it. Muhammad Shayan Qureshi Karachi
