The Romanian heavy metal band Trooper returns to Sala Palatului on February 28, 2026, with the show “Regeneza,” a journey through its entire discography, along with special guest Blaze Bayley, Iron Maiden’s vocalist from 1994–1999. The concert is a transformation and a return to the spiritual roots of the band, according to lead singer Alin “Coiotu’” Dincă. “Things are changing radically in the wide world and in our small world. It is paradoxical, I feel like we are starting over in a way, but at the same time, we are continuing what we began in 1992, 34 years ago, when we composed our first song, ‘Fear of Death,’” he added in a Facebook post on the band’s page. The special concert will also feature a guest. Blaze Bayley was the vocalist at the first concert of the legendary heavy metal band Iron Maiden in Romania. After leaving Iron Maiden, Blaze launched a solid solo career, resulting in 11 albums and hundreds of concerts around the world. He will take the stage for a powerful set before Trooper’s concert. “The fact that Blaze agreed to be part of this concert-event means a lot to us. We started out as Iron Maiden fans, and the stars aligned so that we always had the music of these giants by our side. Blaze has been our friend for many, many years. We recorded together, we played together, we walked through Bucharest at night,” said the Trooper frontman. In their 30-year career, Trooper has released 12 studio albums, performed for more than a million people in over 1,000 concerts, and shared the stage with Iron Maiden, Scorpions, Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Whitesnake, Europe, Manowar, Nazareth, WASP, Sepultura, and Prodigy. radu@romania-insider.com (Photo source: Trooper on Facebook)

Philippine Sea, January 7 (ANI): An earthquake of magnitude 6.2 rattled the Philippine Sea, a statement by the National Center for Seismology (NCS) said. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 85km. In a post on X, the NCS said, "EQ of M: 6.2, On: 07/01/2026 08:33:00 IST, Lat: 7.27 N, Long: 126.87 E, Depth: 85 Km, Location: Philippine Sea." NCS_Earthquake/status/2008739774203654158?s=20" rel="noopener" target="_blank">https://x.com/NCS_Earthquake/status/2008739774203654158?s=20 The Philippine Sea borders the Philippines to its east, but it's a vast part of the western Pacific Ocean, with its floor being the Philippine Sea Plate; while the Philippines has sovereign rights over its adjacent waters (the West Philippine Sea within the South China Sea), the broader Philippine Sea is a large oceanic basin shared with other nations like Japan and Taiwan. The Philippines lies in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a tectonic belt of volcanic arcs and oceanic trenches in the Pacific Ocean. John Dale B Dianala, assistant professor at the National Institute of Geological Sciences, the University of the Philippines in Diliman, told Al Jazeera that just by virtue of the geographic and geologic setting of the country, the Philippines is home to many onshore and offshore tectonic faults. "The whole length of the Philippines, around 1,800km, is right along the boundary of two major tectonic plates - the Philippine Sea plate and Eurasian plate - part of the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire. These two plates, thousands of kilometres wide, have been pushing against each other for millions of years at two to three times the rate of fingernail growth," he said. "Each earthquake is a manifestation of the periodic release of the stress along long fractures on these plates - what geologists call 'faults' - which rupture several metres of movement along a fault in large earthquakes," he further told Al Jazeera. "When the displacement involves vertical uplift of the seafloor from an offshore fault, like in the Philippine Trench to the east of the country, the movement displaces the water column from the depths of the ocean that then propagate to the surface and coasts in the form of tsunamis. Strong shaking can also cause submarine landslides that can also trigger tsunamis," he added. (ANI)

With the Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited created for the sole purpose of franchise cricket, it was unsurprising to see them win a bid of INR 901 crore for the Bangalore-based women’s team. The company which is owned by United Spirits Limited, a part of the Diageo Group, has Mike Hesson as the Director of Cricket. The team will be named similarly to their equivalent men’s team and will be one of the five teams involved in the inaugural Women’s T20 League. Ben Sawyer who is the current coach of the New Zealand Women's national team is highly regarded in the coaching circuits around the world for the success he has already achieved and will be the head coach of the side. He will be assisted by Malolan Rangarajan who will also be the Head of Scouting. Vanitha VR also has a dual role as a fielding coach and a scout while RX Murali has been assigned as the batting coach. India tennis player Sania Mirza was announced as the mentor of the team. The franchise won the bid for the most expensive signing of the first mega auction when they shelled out INR 3.4 crore for India opener Smriti Mandhana and named her captain of the side. They spent decent money on signing Australian star Ellyse Perry with her national teammates Megan Schutt and Erin Burns also a part of the setup. Sophie Devine, Heather Knight, and Dane van Niekerk are the other overseas players they picked up for a low price with a chunk of their budget going into acquiring the services of India’s wicket-keeper Richa Ghosh and fast bowler Renuka Singh. Even after being one of the strongest sides on paper, their performance on the field was disappointing as they managed only two wins in the 2023 Women’s T20 League and finished fifth. As a result, they released as many as seven players including the overseas trio of Dane van Niekerk, Erin Burns, and Megan Schutt. However, in the 2024 auction, they did manage to get Kate Cross who is a like-for-like replacement for Megan Schutt while Georgia Wareham can easily fill in the shoes of van Niekerk. Unfortunately, they will be without the services of Heather Knight this season but roped in in-form South African all-rounder Nadine de Klerk as her replacement. Bangalore once again looks like a solid unit with all bases covered and will hope that they can show that on the field this time and at least make it to the playoffs this season. …read more

U.S. Travel Advisory: Bulgaria a Secure and Underrated European Gem The U.S. State Department has rated Bulgaria as one of the safest destinations for travelers in Europe, assigning it a Level 1 status, the lowest risk category Bulgaria observes Ivanovden, or St. John’s Day, on January 7, one of the country’s significant traditional holidays marking the feast of St. John the Baptist. Celebrated widely across the nation, Ivanovden combines religious reverence, folkloric customs, and communal gatherings, reflecting Bulgaria’s deep-rooted cultural heritage. The holiday is especially meaningful for those named Ivan, Ivanka, or variations thereof, who enjoy the day as their personal name day, a tradition cherished in Bulgarian society. The celebration of Ivanovden is closely tied to Bulgaria’s Orthodox Christian calendar, with St. John the Baptist honored for his role in preparing the way for Jesus Christ. Orthodox services are held in churches throughout the country, and many believers attend to receive blessings and participate in rituals. Priests conduct prayers for health, prosperity, and protection from evil spirits, particularly during the winter months, which historically were considered a vulnerable period in the agricultural calendar. For many families, attending the liturgy is an essential aspect of the holiday, combining spiritual reflection with community connection. Beyond its religious significance, Ivanovden is marked by a rich array of folk customs, many of which are still observed in rural areas. In some regions, families bake special breads and pastries, often shaped in symbolic forms, such as crosses or circles, which are then shared with neighbors and friends. These offerings are not only a culinary delight but also carry a symbolic wish for health, fertility, and abundance in the year ahead. Traditional Bulgarian cuisine plays a central role during the celebrations, with tables often laden with dishes such as stuffed cabbage, beans, stews, and seasonal fruits. Local households pride themselves on the care taken in preparing these meals, which reinforce the values of hospitality and familial bonds. One of the most distinctive customs of Ivanovden involves the symbolic “washing” or “cleansing” rituals associated with water, reflecting St. John’s baptismal connection. In some villages, communities gather by rivers or springs to perform ceremonial washing of hands and faces, believed to bring health and spiritual purification. This practice, passed down through generations, underscores the continuity of ancient beliefs alongside Orthodox Christian observance. In certain northern and western regions of Bulgaria, young men and women also take part in folk games and processions, singing traditional songs that have been preserved for centuries. A particularly joyous aspect of Ivanovden is the celebration of name days. Individuals named Ivan, Ivanka, and related variations receive congratulations, small gifts, and well-wishes from family, friends, and colleagues. Name days in Bulgaria often rival birthdays in terms of social importance, and it is common for households to host gatherings or festive lunches to honor their namesakes. In urban centers, restaurants and cafes may see a noticeable increase in patrons celebrating the occasion, while in smaller towns and villages, local community centers often organize public festivities that include music, dance, and traditional costumes. Cultural organizations and folklore ensembles frequently stage performances around Ivanovden, showcasing Bulgaria’s musical and dance heritage. Audiences enjoy traditional dances such as the horo, accompanied by the lively rhythms of bagpipes, tambourines, and other regional instruments. These performances provide both entertainment and an opportunity to connect younger generations with the customs and values of the past. Local artisans often use the occasion to display crafts, including embroidery, pottery, and woodwork, which serve as a tangible link to the country’s rural and cultural history. Ivanovden also fosters a sense of community responsibility. In many areas, residents participate in charitable initiatives, sharing food, gifts, and resources with those in need. This communal generosity is seen as an extension of the holiday’s spiritual dimension, emphasizing care for others and social cohesion. For Bulgarian families abroad, the celebration offers an opportunity to maintain cultural ties, with communities organizing church services, traditional meals, and cultural events to pass the heritage on to younger generations. On January 8, Bulgaria marks the Day of Maternity Care, widely known as Babinden (Midwives' Day). According to the old calendar, the holiday falls on January 21, while under the new style it is observed on January 8. Men from the town of Kalofer once again entered the icy waters of the Tundzha River on Epiphany/Yordanovden, continuing one of Bulgaria’s most distinctive and widely recognized traditions. Yordanovden, celebrated on January 6, is one of the most significant religious and cultural holidays in Bulgaria. Known internationally as Epiphany or Theophany, the day commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ in the River Jordan by John the Baptist On January 1, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church marks St. Basil’s Day, also known as Vasilitsa or Survaki, one of the most widely observed calendar and name-day holidays in the country. Central Station - Sofia is transformed into a soaring, buzzing microcosm, thanks to the official opening of the world-famous exhibition "Invasion of the Giant Bugs" On St. Stephen’s Day, observed on the third day of Christmas, the Orthodox Church commemorates the first Christian martyr, closing the traditional cycle of year-end Christian celebrations Bulgaria's Strategic Role in the EU's Drone Wall Defense Initiative When Politics Means Violence
