The Portugal News
I have closely followed this process since the first steps, both in Portugal and during the visit we made to Riyadh in June, and I wanted to understand to what extent this third visit of the Saudi delegation to our country represents just another institutional moment or, on the contrary, a real turning point. Abilio’s initial answer is clear and sets the tone for the entire interview. This is no longer a visit of intention, but of continuity. When a delegation returns with more participants, more sectors involved, and denser agendas, it means that the work done previously has built trust and opened doors. According to him, the effort of the last two years is now beginning to be visible because the conversations are no longer exploring and have started to have substance, maturity, and concrete objectives. I also questioned him about the initial resistance, especially on the Portuguese side. Abílio does not shy away from the topic. There was hesitation and misunderstanding, not because of rejection, but because of ignorance. For many Portuguese entrepreneurs, Saudi Arabia was seen as a distant and complex market, when in reality it was going through one of the fastest economic transformations in the world. What has changed is the consistency. With results and regular presence, distrust gave way to curiosity and, in many cases, ambition. One of the central questions of the interview was precisely about the true value of these visits, beyond the communiqués and memos. The answer is perhaps one of the most important for readers. The value lies in what is not officially communicated: building trust, access to the right decision-makers and continuing relationships. Memos are important, but they do not create investment by themselves. What creates investment is the combination of people, timing, real opportunities, and on-the-ground monitoring. When talking about Vision 2030, Abílio underlines something that I also personally felt in Riyadh: speed and ambition. It is not a political slogan, but a program of national transformation with execution, goals, and resources. The decision-making and implementation capacity is impressive, but also the human dimension of a young country, open to the world and focused on diversifying its economy beyond oil. I insisted on the human dimension of the business and Abílio was categorical. In Saudi Arabia, as in much of the Middle East, the personal relationship is decisive. Without trust and credibility, processes do not move forward. With them, everything accelerates. It is this human base that turns meetings into long-term commitments. I also asked him where he feels that Portuguese entrepreneurs underestimate their own value. The answer is straightforward: Portugal underestimates its ability to deliver quality, engineering, rigour, and reliability. Sectors such as specialised construction, infrastructure, energy, technology, hospitality, and technical services are areas where Portugal has clear advantages. In addition, there is a decisive quality: agility and adaptability. The feedback coming from the Saudi side, according to Abílio, has been very positive. Portugal is seen as a stable country, with talent and serious partners. This perception paves the way for more structured projects, including urban development, tourism and real estate, areas where long-term logic and quality of execution are fundamental. When I asked him about frustrations, he did not hide them. There was wear and tear and difficult moments, but today he sees them as a necessary part of the process. Building a new bridge requires time and resilience. This bridge, between Portugal and Saudi Arabia, is now more solid because it has been tested. The interview ends with a simple but powerful idea. Saudi Arabia is worth looking at as a strategic partner because it is one of the global hubs of economic transformation and investment. For Portugal, this relationship is not just a commercial opportunity. It is a long-term strategic opportunity, at a time when both countries are redesigning their future.

New drilling program and metallurgical tests underway Market study initiated for antimony products from Fortin Zone LONGUEUIL, Québec, Jan. 21, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Azimut Exploration Inc. (“Azimut” or the “Company”) (TSXV: AZM) (OTCQX: AZMTF) is pleased to announce the start of a new minimum 5,000 metre diamond drilling program on the Fortin antimony-gold zone (the “Fortin Zone”) on its wholly owned Wabamisk Property (the “Property”) in the Eeyou Istchee James Bay (“James Bay”) region of Québec, Canada. The Fortin Zone is evolving into one of the largest antimony-bearing mineralized systems in Canada. Drilling to date outlined a 1.8-kilometre-long antimony-gold-bearing body traced to a vertical depth of 250 metres, which remains open in all directions. Since its discovery by prospecting in 2024, the Company has drilled 86 holes (12,286 m) on the Fortin Zone and surrounding targets. A separate gold target immediately south of and subparallel to Fortin is also currently being delineated by drilling. In addition, Azimut drilled 26 holes (3,633 m) late last year on the Rosa Zone (gold), where assay results are pending. Rosa is 15 kilometres west of Fortin. 2026 Outlook A comprehensive exploration program is accelerating the project’s advancement. Drilling: The minimum 5,000 m drilling phase with two rigs aims to: - Expand the mineralized body at depth and along strike; and - Further delineate wide high-grade lenses with incremental and infill holes. One of the main objectives is to test the Fortin Zone at depth for potential gold enrichment related to antimony–gold vertical zonation, as documented in several deposits worldwide. A preliminary 3D modelling of the mineralized body is in progress. Metallurgical tests and market studies: SGS Canada has been mandated to conduct initial metallurgical tests on the mineralized material from Fortin and to assess global market demand for such mineral products. Assessment of new gold targets: Significant results since 2024 are driving a comprehensive re-evaluation of the Property’s gold potential, with ground geophysics, prospecting, and drilling planned on high-priority targets. One of the most notable identified targets is the 15-kilometre underexplored strike between the Fortin and Rosa zones (see Figure 5). Key Results (see Figures 1 to 8, Tables 1 and 2) This press release presents drilling highlights from the second delineation phase on the Fortin Zone, including the final set of assay results received (see Table 1). Previous drilling and channel sampling results have been disclosed (see press releases (“PR”) of October 29, 2024i, January 16, 2025ii, May 22, 2025iii, July 9, 2025iv and October 23, 2025v). The 35 holes (5,890 m) of the second phase were drilled at an average of 100-metre-spacing, both along strike and at depth, down to a maximum vertical depth of 250 metres. Twenty-nine (29) holes (83%) returned antimony mineralization with grades above 0.2% Sb, including 19 holes with gold grades above 0.5 g/t Au. The new assay results include: The best results previously reported from this phase include (see PR of October 23, 2025): The gold target 110 metres south of Fortin has been delineated along a minimum 400 m strike, dipping steeply to the south. Gold grades are related to disseminated to semi-massive arsenopyrite hosted in sheared metasediments. The target appears to correlate well with induced polarization and arsenic soil anomalies. The best results include: Preliminary geometry of the Fortin Zone Strike-length: At least 1.8 kilometres, based on 58 mineralized holes, within a broader 2.4-kilometre-long prospective corridor, based on 2 holes drilled on the eastern and western extensions (WS25-22 and WS25-34, respectively). Thickness: Intervals grading above 0.1% Sb range from 5 to 50 metres wide along the hole, averaging roughly 25 metres. Dip: To the south at approximately 70 to 75 degrees. Due to topographic constraints, hole WS25-55 was drilled toward the south, resulting in a long down-dip interval. Vertical extent: Tested from surface down to 250 metres; open at depth. Mineralized system and geological context The antimony-gold mineralized system is associated with a massive albitic stratiform hydrothermal alteration zone (the “albitic unit” previously described as a feldspar porphyry intrusive sill), within a thick detrital metasedimentary sequence. Evidence of very strong albitic alteration, with progressive replacement of host rocks, has been documented. This alteration is possibly controlled by the original rock’s porosity and fracturing. The massive albitic unit has been intersected by 77 holes over a lateral distance of 2.65 kilometres. Its thickness varies from several metres to over 90 metres. The multi-kilometre lateral continuity of the albitic unit may suggest a kilometre-scale vertical extent. The mineralized system is currently recognized almost continuously over a distance of 1.8 kilometres and remains open along strike and at depth. Antimony sulphides (berthierite: FeSb2S4, gudmundite: FeSbS, and stibnite: Sb2S3) are associated with intense quartz veining and brecciated facies within the albitic unit, and are commonly associated with other sulphides (arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite). Sericite is the main alteration mineral, locally accompanied by chlorite, epidote and carbonate. Massive to semi-massive mineralization occurs along the southern sheared and locally folded contact between the albitic sill and less-altered metasedimentary host rocks (mostly siltstones). The northern contact is also mineralized, but drilling to date suggests it is less continuous than the southern contact. The quartz vein network is mostly subparallel to the east-west schistosity. The rheologic contrast between the brittle albitic unit and the more ductile metasedimentary rocks appears to be one of the key controls on mineralization at the scale of the Fortin Zone. Antimony-rich systems are unusual in Archean settings in Québec. The mineralized albitic unit on the Wabamisk Property lies along the major tectono-metamorphic boundary separating the volcano-plutonic La Grande Subprovince and the metasedimentary Opinaca Subprovince. This geological environment has already been recognized as prospective for gold, exemplified by the Eleonore gold deposit. At Wabamisk, the antimony-rich zone may transition to a deeper gold-rich zone. Mineralogical and metallurgical characterization of the mineralized material, including comminution and flotation testwork, is progressing well. About Antimony The price of antimony has been very volatile over the last 2 years, due to ongoing supply shortages exacerbated by trade disputes. Antimony is listed as a critical mineral by the Canadian and American governments and the European Commission. Three countries account for about 90% of the world’s production, estimated to be 100,000 tonnes in 2024: China 60%, Tajikistan 17% and Russia 13%. Antimony is not currently mined at scale in Canada or the United States. In August 2024, China imposed restrictions on antimony exports, leading to significant supply disruptions. While some restrictions have since been lifted, antimony remains subject to broader export controls, highlighting the importance of diversifying critical mineral supply chains outside of China. Source: USGS, Antimony Commodity Summary, January 2025. About the Wabamisk Property Wabamisk is a wholly owned project comprising 673 claims covering 356 km2. The adjacent Wabamisk East Property (205 claims, 108.5 km2) is mainly explored for its lithium potential. Together, the Wabamisk and Wabamisk East projects provide a strategic 51-kilometre strike position in one of the most prospective belts in the James Bay region. Wabamisk lies 13 kilometres east of the Clearwater Property (Fury Gold Mines Ltd), 42 kilometres northeast of the Whabouchi lithium deposit (Rio Tinto – Nemaska Lithium), and 70 kilometres south of the Eleonore gold mine (Dhilmar Ltd). Major powerlines pass through or close to the Property’s eastern end, and the North Road highway passes 37 kilometres to the south. The nearest town is Nemaska, a Cree village municipality 55 kilometres to the southwest. Drilling, Analytical Protocols and Project Management Nouchimi-RJLL Drilling Inc. of Rouyn-Noranda, Québec, is conducting the drilling program with two rigs using NQ core diameter. Sawed half-core drill core samples are sent to ALS Laboratories in Val-d’Or and Montréal, Québec, where gold is analyzed by fire assay, with atomic absorption and gravimetric finishes for grades above 3.0 g/t Au. Samples are also analyzed for a 48-element suite using ICP. Antimony is also analyzed using four-acid digestion and ICP-AES (Sb-ICP08). Azimut applies industry-standard QA/QC procedures to its drilling and prospecting programs. All batches sent for analysis included certified reference materials, blanks and field duplicates. Malawi's Parliament has issued a stinging rebuke to the Malawi Police Service (MPS), demanding the immediate release of Dedza Mlunduni Member of Parliament and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) national campaign director Moses Kunkuyu, in a move that lays bare what critics say is a growing pattern of political policing and constitutional contempt. In a formal letter dated January 19, 2026, addressed to Inspector General of Police, Parliament has reminded the police that Kunkuyu is constitutionally immune from arrest, describing his detention as a direct violation of Section 60(1) of the Constitution. Kunkuyu, who served as Minister of Information and Digitalisation under former president Lazarus Chakwera, voluntarily surrendered himself to National Police Headquarters in Lilongwe on Monday after learning that police were hunting for him. Despite his cooperation, police arrested and charged him with allegedly inciting violence during the funeral of former First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Madaitso Kazombo. However, Parliament says the arrest is illegal, disruptive, and constitutionally indefensible. Keep up with the latest headlines on WhatsApp | LinkedIn In the letter seen by this publication, Clerk of Parliament Fiona Kalemba informed the police that Kunkuyu is an active member of the Parliamentary Committee on International Relations, which is currently sitting, and that his arrest directly interferes with the functioning of the National Assembly. Kalemba cited Section 60(1) of the Constitution, which clearly provides that "the Speaker, every Deputy Speaker, and every member of the National Assembly shall, except in cases of treason, be privileged from arrest while going to, returning from or while in the precincts of the National Assembly." She warned the police that continued detention of Kunkuyu amounts to an unconstitutional obstruction of Parliament's work. "In compliance with section 60(1) of the Constitution and as part of the performance of his parliamentary duties, it is imperative that Hon. Kunkuyu's attendance of the scheduled committee meetings remains unimpeded and that further disruption of the operations of the National Assembly is avoided," Kalemba wrote. In a pointed closing, she added: "We trust that the above information has offered the necessary guidance and will enable you to come to an appropriate decision in the matter." Behind the diplomatic language lies a blunt message: the police have overreached, and Parliament is not amused. Kunkuyu's lawyer, George Jivason Kadzipatike, was even more direct, warning that the police are testing the very foundations of constitutional governance. "We expect that Hon. Kunkuyu will be released by the police today. Otherwise, we shall conclude that the country is no longer governed in accordance with the law," Kadzipatike said. The charge itself has also raised serious questions. In a widely circulated video clip from Kazombo's funeral, Kunkuyu does not issue direct threats or calls for violence. Instead, he speaks in parables, likening the arrest of MCP Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda to the social isolation of someone wrongly accused of having leprosy. Kunkuyu warned that MCP leaders and supporters would mobilise at the party headquarters after the burial to demand the release of those they believe are being unfairly targeted -- a statement his supporters argue is political mobilisation, not incitement. Legal observers say the case exposes a troubling trend: selective enforcement of the law, where opposition figures are swiftly arrested while constitutional safeguards are treated as optional. More damning is the fact that Kunkuyu did not flee, did not resist, and did not defy the law -- he walked into police headquarters on his own. Yet the police chose to arrest him anyway, even as Parliament sat and the Constitution stood in plain sight. As pressure mounts, the question now confronting the Malawi Police Service is stark and unavoidable: Will it obey the Constitution, or double down on an arrest Parliament itself says is unlawful? For many Malawians, the answer will signal whether the rule of law still governs the country -- or whether the police have become a blunt instrument in an increasingly politicised justice system.

Lindsey Halligan leaves DOJ as judge calls her use of title 'charade' Lindsey Halligan has left the Department of Justice after a federal judge threatened disciplinary actions against the controversial U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Jan. 20. Halligan, a former personal lawyer to President Donald Trump, was the prosecutor who brought charges against Former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James last year. Those cases were dismissed in November 2025 after a U.S. district judge ruled Halligan was not lawfully chosen to head the office for the Eastern District of Virginia. The Department of Justice has appealed the dismissals. In announcing the departure on X, Bondi blamed Democratic Senators from Virginia for using the chamber's longstanding tradition of allowing members from a state to block U.S. Attorney nominations for their state. "Democratic Senators weaponized the blue-slip process, making it impossible for Lindsey's term as United States Attorney to continue following the expiration of her 120-day appointment," Bondi said. Without Senate confirmation, Halligan was limited to a 120-day interim appointment, which a judge found had ended last year. Even under the Justice Department's more generous view of when her interim term would end, that 120-day-period concluded on Jan. 20. Judge threatens sanctions The departure came after district judge David Novak ordered Halligan to stop referring to herself as the top federal prosecutor in Virginia's Eastern District in court filings before him in a Jan. 20 ruling. Novak described Halligan's continued use of the title as a "charade" and threatened disciplinary proceedings against her and any other prosecutor who continues using the title in his court. He also suggested that the Justice Department was defying a court order that found she was unlawfully appointed. In a defiant filing last week, the department accused Novak of exceeding his authority by questioning Halligan's appointment. In his ruling, Novak said the department's filing "contains a level of vitriol more appropriate for a cable-news talk show and falls far beneath the level of advocacy expected from litigants in this Court, particularly the Department of Justice." Halligan's tenure began after predecessor's firing In September, Bondi purportedly appointed Halligan to head the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia after the previous head, Erik Siebert, departed. Siebert reportedly expressed skepticism about bringing charges against Comey or James, telling colleagues in an email that he had resigned; however, Trump later said in a social media post that he fired him. "I fired [Siebert], and there is a GREAT CASE, and many lawyers, and legal pundits, say so. Lindsey Halligan is a really good lawyer, and likes you, a lot," Trump said in the Truth Social post addressed to "Pam." Hours after that post, Bondi issued an order authorizing Halligan to be the interim head of the office. Before that, Halligan had never been a prosecutor. Within weeks of the appointment, Halligan's office secured indictments against both Comey and James. However, on Nov. 24, senior U.S. District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie wrote in an opinion that only a district court had the power to appoint a new head to the Eastern District of Virginia. The Drug Enforcement Administration announced the “Fentanyl Free America” campaign at a press conference on St. Thomas Tuesday, and confirmed there have been 12 fentanyl related deaths in the Virgin Islands since 2022. “Fentanyl remains the most lethal drug threat facing the United States,” and almost 50,000 Americans died from fentanyl overdoses in 2025, according to Jose “Tony” Velazquez-Vega, Public Affairs Specialist for the Caribbean Division of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. “The DEA has seized more than 45 million pills and over 9,000 pounds of fentanyl powder nationwide, removing millions of potentially deadly doses from circulation,” he added. The DEA is working to prevent fentanyl from reaching the Virgin Islands, and local officials said they’ve been bolstering efforts to educate the community and provide access to Narcan, which can reverse the deadly effects of opiates. Enforcement, education, and partnership are the goals of the initiative, according to Michael Miranda, Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Caribbean Division. The potent drug is often mixed into other substances, and many users end up unknowingly consuming fentanyl. Health Commissioner Justa Encarnacion and Police Commissioner Mario Brooks said local officials are working closely with federal representatives to teach Emergency Medical Technicians and officers how to use Narcan. “We’ve had 23 opiate overdoses over the last three years,” Encarnacion said, and Narcan can reverse the effects of fentanyl and save lives. The first fentanyl overdose death in the Virgin Islands occurred on April 28, 2021, when 30-year-old Rachel “Starchild” Atnip was found dead at her home on St. Thomas. Her death led to a federal criminal investigation that identified a man named Elijah Hakim as the source of fentanyl-laced pills, which he had been importing from Atlanta, Ga. A jury later found 36-year-old Hakim guilty of conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, and he was sentenced to seven years in prison. Rodney Querrard, Drug Intelligence Officer for the region’s High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, said there have 12 opiate-related overdose deaths since, including one in 2022, four in the St. Thomas-St. John district and two on St. Croix in 2023; and three on St. Thomas-St. John and two on St. Croix in 2024. “Thank God so far in 2025 we have none, but I believe we have some toxicology reports pending, so we’ll find out if in fact the deaths that we believe might be opioid related, is in fact that,” Querrard said. “We work together. I go into the schools and have Department of Health officials with me,” as well as local and federal law enforcement, and “we talk to the students,” and teachers, and “whoever wants to listen” about the dangers of opiates. “As of today’s date, we’ve talked with — not to, with — over 12,000 students in the territory,” in public, private, homeschools, and night schools, he added. “Believe me, one pill can kill,” Querrard said, and there are other synthetic drugs “popping up, and of course are affecting people’s lives throughout the United States, and unfortunately here in the V.I.” He said there are also five prescription drug drop boxes installed thorughout the territory at post offices where “everybody in the territory” can drop off any unused drugs. Querrard pleaded with residents not to dispose of medications by flushing them down the toilet or in the garbage “because it ends up in the water table, or worse, in somebody’s system,” and said opiates placed in the anonymous drop boxes are properly disposed of. “Our goal is to save as many lives as possible, even if we save one, it’s all worth it,” Querrard said. Evan Martinez, Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the DEA’s Caribbean Division, said the Virgin Islands “is and always has been very important to DEA, and I think it was going back to 2021 when we saw our first fentanyl overdose here in the territory, and nobody could believe it had happened. Back then it seemed like it was a problem strictly related to the states.” But since that time, DEA has worked with V.I. Police on “every single case” related to drug overdoses and “we’ve worked those cases backwards” and traced drug trafficking back to “all four corners of the U.S,” Martinez said. He urged the public to”to remain on high alert” and “the scariest thing about this drug, the thing that separates this from all the horrific drugs we’ve seen before, is most of the time when people OD on fentanyl, they don’t realize they’re taking fentanyl.” Laced drugs lead to “overdoses of completely innocent people, poisonings really, because they’re not intentionally taking this drug,” he said.

ASAHIKAWA, Japan (Kyodo) -- A hotel and a chapel housed in dome-shaped structures made from single, seamless pieces of ice opened Tuesday for the winter season in the Tomamu ski resort area in Hokkaido. "We want people to enjoy the cold through the experience," Iwao Watanabe, general manager of Hoshino Resorts Tomamu, said on the annual winter attraction in central Hokkaido, as an outdoor thermometer showed about minus 10 C. The Ice Hotel is made by spraying water and snow onto balloons on cold nights and freezing them, creating structures about 8.5 meters in diameter and 3.5 meters high. The lodging is limited to one group per day, with the temperature inside ranging between minus 5 C and minus 7 C. Guests staying at other hotels in the resort complex can use it for an additional fee of 28,000 yen ($177) per person. It is open until Feb. 20 and is already fully booked for the season. The ceiling and walls are all made of ice, but sleeping bags are provided to help guests withstand the cold overnight, according to its website. The Ice Chapel, which stands in one corner of a row of ice domes known as the Ice Village, has hosted more than 660 wedding ceremonies and marks its 20th anniversary this year.
