The figures were compiled based on reports submitted by district education officers, and additional deputy commissioners (ADCs) of all districts have now been directed to physically verify the condition of the schools and submit their reports by Sept 30. Gurgaon district has around 570 govt schools across the city, Farrukhnagar, Sohna and Pataudi. Of these, 62 school buildings were earlier reported to be in poor or unsafe condition, including 34 in the city, 16 in Farrukhnagar, five in Sohna and seven in Pataudi. The fresh assessment will examine the actual condition of school buildings and help authorities prepare a school-wise action plan instead of relying solely on the earlier departmental reports, which had also been flagged to Public Works Department. Officials said the verification would establish whether the buildings listed earlier as unsafe still remain in the same condition, and whether the damage is limited to particular portions or extends to the entire structure — a distinction expected to be crucial in deciding the next course of action. 'A school will not automatically be marked for demolition merely because it figured in an earlier list. If the entire building is found to be in a bad condition and demolition is required, the existing structure will first go through the prescribed auction process. The building material will be auctioned before demolition and clearance of the structure. On the other hand, if the building is structurally sound and only some portions, rooms, roofs, walls or other facilities require intervention, those schools will be taken up for repair rather than demolition,' an official said.
