Crystal Palace Football Club have confirmed a new multi-year sponsorship agreement with Aurora Utilities. Aurora will become the Premier League club's Official Grid Connection Partner. The deal gives the company branding across LED screens and other assets at Selhurst Park. It also grants access to the club's premium hospitality and events facilities throughout the season. An Independent Distribution Network Operator is a company licensed by Ofgem to build, own and operate local electricity networks. These sit alongside the traditional regional Distribution Network Operators, or DNOs, that have historically managed Britain's local grids. IDNOs typically take on the so-called 'last mile' of connection work, linking new developments to the wider distribution network. Aurora is licensed to operate anywhere in Great Britain. Its stated focus spans electric vehicle charging, battery storage, data centres, industrial and commercial developments, and residential schemes. The company says its role extends beyond simply completing connections – it also owns and runs the resulting local networks on an ongoing basis. Grid connection delays have become one of the more persistent headaches facing developers across Britain's energy transition. Long queues for capacity, particularly for large renewables and battery storage projects, have drawn criticism from industry bodies and government alike in recent years. Simon Reilly, CEO of Aurora Utilities, framed the partnership in those terms. "For many infrastructure projects, the grid connection is the critical path; without confidence over available capacity and the route to a grid connection, projects cannot move forward as planned," he says. Simon notes that the job of an IDNO does not stop once a connection is delivered. "The role of an Independent Distribution Network Operator is not only to help deliver the connection, but to own and operate the local network safely and reliably for the long term," he adds. Though, at its core, this partnership is a branding and hospitality arrangement rather than an operational one, Robin Campbell, Head of Sponsorship at Crystal Palace Football Club, is particularly enthusiastic about welcoming such an innovative company to the club's roster of sponsors. "We're delighted to welcome Aurora Utilities to Crystal Palace. They are an ambitious business operating in an increasingly important part of the UK's infrastructure," he says. "This partnership is about much more than brand visibility. Selhurst Park provides a fantastic setting for Aurora to bring together clients, partners and stakeholders, both on matchdays and through events across the year." That framing is fairly standard for sports sponsorship deals of this kind, where the primary value for the commercial partner lies in networking opportunities with clients and stakeholders rather than direct promotion to fans. Sponsorship deals between football clubs and infrastructure or utilities firms remain relatively unusual compared with the more familiar tie-ups involving betting, technology or consumer brands. For Aurora, still a relatively young entrant in the IDNO market compared with longer-established players, the association with a Premier League club offers a platform to raise its profile among developers and connection providers who might otherwise encounter it only through tender documents. Robin says the club is looking forward to building the relationship over the coming seasons, describing Aurora as "an ambitious business operating in an increasingly important part of the UK's infrastructure". Whether that ambition translates into a larger role in the club's redevelopment plans at Selhurst Park, which the announcement notes are ongoing, remains to be seen.
