‘It's just putting us in danger': St. Johns County students react to Cat in the Hat threat videos

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — Students are reacting as St. Johns County Schools will have extra law enforcement on campuses Tuesday after a viral social media trend using an AI version of the Dr. Seuss character has been used to make threats against schools. We observed police units outside of Patriot Oaks Academy-it's unclear how many extra units were there beyond their normal presence. 'I can definitely say a little bit shook, but you know it's on the Internet type of thing,' said Nease High Schooler Kaleah Edgar. The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office says if you see viral Cat in Hat posts, don't engage with it. Don't share. Don't like it. Just report it to the Sheriff's Office. St John's County Public Schools Superintendent Brennan Asplen sent a safety message to parents and guardians in response to the threatening children's character posts. 'We are actively monitoring and reviewing content produced involving SJCSD schools with the St. Johns Sheriff's Office and the FL Department of Education's Office of Safe Schools,' Asplen said. 'I think that is very much needed given the circumstances… that people don't really care for safety, you know. Making rumors like this, making conspiracy theories about Cat in the Hat. Using AI to edit them at schools, knowing people go here. It's just putting us in danger, especially because we're kids," Edgar added.
