Surprise man accused of sexually abusing juvenile family member arrested in UK

A Surprise man accused of sexually abusing a juvenile family member has been returned to Arizona after authorities say he fled the country to avoid prosecution. Michael Munufie left the country early in the investigation, traveling first to Canada and then to the United Kingdom, according to the Surprise Police Department. Cooperation among Surprise police, the U.S. Marshals Service and law enforcement agencies in the United Kingdom led to Munufie's arrest. He remained in British custody while authorities completed the legal process required to return him to the United States. U.S. Marshals brought Munufie back to the country on Aug. 28. Surprise police then took custody of him at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Charges for Surprise man accused of sexually abusing a juvenile family member Munufie was booked on three counts of sexual misconduct with a minor and three counts of sexual abuse. Surprise Police Chief Evan Becher credited detectives' 'tremendous diligence and determination' for the arrest. 'We are extremely grateful to the U.S. Marshals and everyone who assisted in making his return possible,' Becher said in a Tuesday news release. U.S. Marshal Van Bayless said the case should serve as a warning to suspects who believe crossing international borders will prevent law enforcement from finding them. 'Michael Munufie is accused of committing horrific crimes against a juvenile family member and then fleeing across international borders to avoid facing justice,' Bayless said. 'We hope his return provides the victim and her family with an important step toward justice and healing.' Munufie is being held on a $150,000 bond.
