According to Schottenheimer, Smith is set to undergo thumb surgery this week and will miss the next four to six weeks while he recovers. Smith is among the most talented guards in the entire league, so his absence from the offensive line is a major loss for the Cowboys ahead of the season. Smith will be heading to the injured reserve list with a designation for return, while TJ Bass will slide into the starting lineup.
