Kolkata: The West Bengal Assembly will hold a special session on September 10 to introduce the West Bengal Universities & Colleges Administration and Regulation Amendment Bill, CM Suvendu Adhikari said.
The state Cabinet approved the Bill on Monday, which seeks to allow inter-transfer of teachers and staff among colleges and universities. The government said the move would enable newly established universities to benefit from faculty from reputed institutions.
The Bill, however, has drawn opposition from teachers' associations and the SUCI, which alleged that it would undermine university autonomy and allow greater political interference.
The Cabinet also decided to shift Aliah University from the minorities department to the higher education department.
He also defended the decision to discontinue scholarships exclusively for Muslim students, calling the earlier arrangement illegal and saying benefits should be available without religious discrimination.
