Omaha In-Custody Death Investigation Update

Omaha Police say the department's Officer-Involved Investigations Team, along with the Nebraska State Patrol and Papillion Police Department, is investigating an incident that occurred Sunday evening leaving one man dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. OPD says Uniform Patrol Officers were in the area of 40th and Cuming Streets and saw a vehicle with a driver who had confirmed warrants. The Omaha Police helicopter, Able 1, responded and began surveillance. The vehicle was going in excess of 100 mph and went to the area of 144th and Shirley St., where the driver, identified as 44-year-old Daniel Read, fled on foot from the vehicle and illegally entered a nearby residence. Police say inside the residence, Read threatened the homeowner with a firearm, however, the homeowner was able to run to safety. After several hours of attempted negotiations between Read and the Omaha Police SWAT and on-scene negotiators, gunshots were heard coming from inside the residence. The residence was ultimately secured and Daniel Read was located inside, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No officers on scene discharged their firearms. Under state law, the case will be presented to a grand jury once the investigation is complete. The law requires a grand jury to be summoned when a person dies while in the custody of, or while being apprehended by law enforcement.
