Navarrette will play Jane, a waitress working the graveyard shift at her local Waffle House as a major storm approaches. Things become considerably more dangerous when an armed stranger turns up, but that's only the beginning. The Hollywood Reporter says the story eventually brings in a massive flood, killer crocodiles, a nuclear blast, a strange bunker beneath the restaurant and extraterrestrials. Nunnelly's screenplay landed on the 2025 Black List of highly regarded unproduced scripts. Its official logline lays out three simple facts: 'The following three things are true: 1. The WAFFLE HOUSE INDEX is a metric used by FEMA to measure the severity of a natural disaster. 2. Jane works the graveyard shift at her local Waffle House. 3. There's a storm coming.' The Waffle House Index is, in fact, a real thing. The informal disaster gauge became associated with FEMA through the US restaurant chain's reputation for staying open, or reopening quickly, during severe weather. Green generally means normal operations, yellow signals a limited menu, and red means a location has closed. If even Waffle House can't keep the doors open, conditions are looking particularly grim.
