Anak Krakatau Eruption Disrupts KPK's Graft Witness Probe

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has rescheduled witness examination across several corruption cases due to the impact of volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau. KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo said one of the witnesses, Lalu Rudi Iskandar, Chair of the West Lombok Regency General Elections Commission, was scheduled to be questioned at the KPK's Red and White Building in Jakarta on September 7, 2026. "The witness was unable to comply with the summons followingflight delays to Jakarta due to volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau," Budi told reporters in Jakarta on Tuesday. Mount Anak Krakatau erupted earlier on September 5, 2026, sending plumes across several regions and disrupting flight operations in some airports, including Soekarno-Hatta Airport near Jakarta. Meanwhile, the corruption case in West Lombok was inveiled after a sting operation against Regent Lalu Ahmad Zaini on July 20, 2026. On July 21, 2026, the KPK named Lalu Ahmad Zaini and the President Director of PT Air Minum Giri Menang Sudirman as suspects in an alleged conflict of interest in the procurement of goods and services. The anti-graft agency also named the two suspects, along with Alvonsus Gani, the President Director of PT Meconel Sistim Instrument, as suspects in an alleged bribery case within the West Lombok Regency Government. The KPK suspects the regent received up to Rp12.4 billion from the corrupt practice, with Rp10.8 billion from the alleged conflict of interest and Rp1.6 billion in bribes after PT Meconel Sistim Instrument was awarded a West Lombok government project.
