Work on New Kabul Project Reaches 30%

Work on the second parcel of the first phase of the New Kabul project is underway in Deh Sabz. The city is designed to accommodate three million people and will be built north of the capital over an area about one and a half times the size of the existing Kabul city. The Ministry of Urban Development and Housing says work on this section has reached 30%, while efforts are also underway to provide water, electricity and other required infrastructure. The first phase of the project is estimated to cost $6.5 billion. Mawlawi Shaghasi Zahid, spokesman for the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing, said: 'The first phase of the New Kabul project consists of a total of 15 parcels, and work is currently underway on five of them.' So far, the project has provided employment opportunities for nearly 1,000 people. New Kabul will be developed in four phases across nearly 370,000 jeribs of land. The company contracted for the project says completion of all phases could take between five and ten years, depending on the pace of work and investment. Sayed Muqaddam Amin, head of the company contracted for the New Kabul project, said: 'Verification of land ownership remains a challenge. The Ministry of Urban Development is working on a new mechanism to facilitate the clearance or verification of property ownership so that the project can move forward more smoothly.' Sayed Massoud, an economic analyst, said: 'This is a good idea, but it requires time. Kabul's population should be reduced from six million to three million, with people moving to Deh Sabz.' Kabul residents also stress that the project should be implemented according to proper standards and equipped with the necessary urban infrastructure and services. Marouf Khan, a Kabul resident, said: 'The New Kabul project is important for Kabul because the city's population has increased significantly.
