What to expect from Chicago Bears UDFA Skyler Thomas

On her latest Making Monsters, Taylor Doll interviews Coach Rod Chance, who coached Chicago Bears undrafted free agent safety Skyler Thomas at Oregon State. Thomas had a really solid camp and performed well in the preseason, and he made Chicago's opening 53-man roster. There were times this offseason when he was running with the ones, so he may be a bigger part of the Bears' future than a typical UDFA. Coach Chance shares thoughts on Skyler's versatility, his strengths, and, most importantly, his personality on and off the football field. Chance also coached at Minnesota, Southern Utah, and Oregon, so he shared some thoughts on several other Bears he coached or coached against, like Braxton Jones, Noah Sewell, Rome Odunze, and Dillion Thieneman. But as for Thomas, he was a huge asset for Coach Chance when the Beavers hired him as their secondary coach in 2024. Thomas was hurt in 2023, so he spent that year in the booth charting the defense and helping the coaches, and he shared that knowledge of the D with Chance, who was hired just a couple of days before spring ball started. "He's got great respect for who he is as a person," Coach said about Thomas. "He is a person that truly does everything one way, which is the best of his ability. Never was a time where he wasn't the first person in the building, the first person in the meeting room; if I sent a group text message out he's the first person to respond to that. The 3.89 GPA as a student-athlete, and as you guys know, he's married, so he kind of had his game plan of life all together. And that's a credit to his family. His mom and dad, they both did a great job kind of working together to raise him, and those characteristics kind of showed up in who he was as a person on a day-to-day basis."
