New Zealanders Have Spoken, Cancer Action Has a Public Mandate - Cancer Society of New Zealand

Cancer Society of New Zealand shared on LinkedIn: 'A newly published New Zealand Medical Journal series of articles has found overwhelming support for evidence-based cancer policies among voters across the political spectrum. Whether it is prevention, screening, early detection, treatment or care, New Zealanders back stronger action on cancer regardless of voting intentions. In a policy environment often divided, cancer control is an issue that unites New Zealanders. The Cancer Society, in partnership with the University of Otago through our research collaboration Te Rōpu Rangahau o te Kāhui Matepukupuku (TRRKM), published the series of peer-reviewed articles in the New Zealand Medical Journal on Friday, 28 August 2026 (Daffodil Day). The articles are the result of a public opinion survey undertaken last year to inform the development of our election manifesto and election advocacy approach. With an ageing and growing population and persistent inequities in cancer outcomes for Māori, Pacific peoples and those living in areas of greater deprivation, the need for action becomes even more urgent. This research provides policymakers with clear evidence of broad public support. The question is no longer whether New Zealanders want stronger cancer action.
