US Coast Guard suspends search for missing kayaker off South Padre Island

The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for a kayaker who disappeared off South Padre Island on Saturday afternoon. Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi received a report around 4:30 p.m. that a person was missing about 400 yards offshore near Beach Access 6. The person was last seen on a kayak. The kayak was later found, but the person was no longer visible, the Coast Guard told Coast Guard crews searched for about six hours, covering approximately 168 square nautical miles. The Coast Guard also worked with Cameron County Park Rangers and Cameron County Beach Patrol. The search was suspended shortly after sunset. Officials say they will continue coordinating with agencies to monitor for further developments. 'Anytime we have a report of a PIW , we surge as many assets to the scene as quickly as we can, and search for as long as we can reasonably hope to find the person,' CDR Jared Korn, Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator, told KRGV. 'Whenever we suspend from actively searching we work in close coordination with our other government agency partners, as we did in this case.
