Sondheim was a master of rhyme and was often within arm's reach of a copy of Roget's Thesaurus or Clement Wood's rhyming dictionary. He never had a long-running, block-busting musical like Les Misérables, Phantom of the Opera or Miss Saigon, but his self-imposed remit was to experiment and push the boundaries, and never to do the same thing twice.
