The Atlanta Falcons have selected Tua Tagovailoa as their Week 1 starting quarterback over Michael Penix Jr. Former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown mocked the franchise with a 5-word message over this decision. Antonio Brown Not Pleased With Tua Tagovailoa Decision He quoted a post by Adam Schefter that shared a list of six straight different Falcons Week 1 starting quarterbacks from 2021 to 2026 (from Matt Ryan to Tua Tagovailoa). Brown wrote on Twitter (X), 'Turning into the Cleveland Browns…' https://twitter.com/AB84/status/2096958627588268258 Penix Jr. tore his ACL last November. Although the Falcons were hoping he'd be ready by Week 1, he only got medical clearance for full 11-on-11 drills two weeks ago. Penix got very little time to settle into head coach Kevin Stefanski's new offense. On the other hand, Tagovailoa struggled during the preseason and only found a bit of rhythm in the final game. Instead of rushing Penix Jr. back to the field, Stefanski chose the cautious route and went with Tagovailoa for Week 1. Cooper Rush will stay on as the backup quarterback, while Penix Jr. will be inactive. 'I've gotten to see Tua work from the spring until now,' Stefanski said. 'New system for all these guys. Like I told them, there's a lot of newness with our players, with coaches, everybody getting up to speed, and he's done a really nice job of working at it.' Regarding Penix's progress, Stefanski said there's a difference between receiving medical clearance and being fully game-ready. 'You can get cleared for 11-on-11 or you get cleared for a game, but then you have to be able to do your job,' he explained. The Falcons never treated this situation like a traditional quarterback competition. All summer, the focus was solely on Penix's recovery and his 'health + readiness to play loose & free,' according to NFL reporter Cameron Wolfe. Tagovailoa could see his QB1 spot at risk if he struggles when Penix Jr. is fully ready. More NFL News From Gridiron Heroics
