Hawkeye Marching Band member removed from life support after collapse in Saturday's heat

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KWWL) -- A University of Iowa student and Hawkeye Marching Band member who collapsed in the heat on Saturday has been taken off of life support, according to a social media post by his family. Derek Phillips' family posted on his Instagram page that Derek collapsed in the heat Saturday and suffered sudden cardiac arrest. He was taken to UIHC but the damage to his brain was too severe and they made the decision to remove him from life support, his family said. They said he's comfortable, surrounded by family, and enveloped in the music he loved so much. The University of Iowa would not confirm the details about what happened, but did say the entire Hawkeye Marching Band family is thinking of Derek and his loved ones. "We are grateful to his parents for providing regular updates to the students who love Derek. This is heartbreaking for everyone who cares for him. The university is in close contact and is offering support," according to a statement from the University. The Hawkeye Marching Band and the School of Music have counselors on-site for students this week.
