Updated September 2026: El Niño is back—and strengthening as we head toward winter 2026–2027. But does a strong El Niño automatically mean a wet, snowy, warm, or wild winter where you live? Not quite. El Niño can have a powerful influence on winter weather, but it is one piece of a much larger weather puzzle. Are We in El Niño Right Now? Yes. As of August 2026, NOAA 's Climate Prediction Center has an El Niño Advisory in effect. El Niño has strengthened considerably over the summer, and NOAA says there is a greater than 90% chance that it will become a very strong El Niño during fall and winter 2026–2027. That has attracted plenty of attention because this El Niño could become unusually powerful. NOAA currently estimates a 69% chance that the event will reach a level during October through December that would exceed previous El Niño events in its record dating back to 1950. But even NOAA emphasizes an important point: A stronger El Niño makes its typical weather impacts more likely; it does not guarantee them. That distinction is especially important when talking about winter forecasts. What Is El Niño, Exactly? El Niño is the warm phase of a natural climate pattern in the tropical Pacific Ocean called ENSO , short for the El Niño–Southern Oscillation. Normally, steady trade winds blow from east to west across the tropical Pacific, pushing warm surface water toward Asia and Australia. During El Niño, those trade winds weaken. Warmer-than-normal ocean water spreads eastward across the central and eastern tropical Pacific. That may sound very far removed from a snowstorm in Ohio or rain in Texas. But the tropical Pacific is one of the world's great weather engines. When such an enormous area of ocean becomes unusually warm, it changes where thunderstorms develop over the Pacific. Those changes can ripple through the atmosphere and alter the jet stream, the fast-moving river of air high above Earth that helps steer storms and separate warmer and colder air masses. Historically, strong El Niño winters often favor milder temperatures across much of the United States and wetter conditions in parts of the West and South. Changes in the Pacific Ocean can also shift the jet stream, influencing where storms, rain, snow, and colder air travel. But notice the words often, tend to, and can. Those are important. Think of El Niño as loading the weather dice rather than deciding how they will land. Scientists can look at previous El Niño winters and identify patterns that occurred more frequently than usual. But no two El Niños are exactly alike, and those broad tendencies do not determine the weather in every region. El Niño changes the odds. It does not write the forecast. Strong El Niño winters have often brought wetter conditions to parts of the southern and western United States. But that is a broad historical tendency, not a rule for every El Niño or every region. This winter is a good example of why the distinction matters. Our 2026–2027 forecast calls for wetter-than-normal conditions in parts of the West, South, and Midwest, while other areas—including parts of the Plains, Southwest, and East—are expected to be drier than normal. Even within one region, conditions can vary. And, of course, precipitation can fall as rain or snow depending on temperature. Does El Niño Mean More Snow? Not automatically. El Niño can change storm tracks and bring more moisture into some areas, but moisture alone does not make snow. The air also has to be cold enough—and that is where other winter weather patterns come into play. That means one region can have a wet El Niño winter dominated by rain, while another may receive more snow. Other places may end up drier than normal altogether. Long before winter arrives, clues are appearing in ocean temperatures, high-altitude winds, solar activity, and other large-scale climate patterns. All of these influences interact with one another. For winter 2026–2027, we're watching El Niño along with patterns in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, solar activity, the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation ( QBO ), the polar vortex, and conditions in the Indian Ocean. Some of these signals may reinforce one another. Others may point toward a different outcome. That's why two strong El Niño winters can produce very different weather in the same place—and why a map showing typical El Niño conditions should not be read as a forecast map for a particular winter. How Does El Niño Fit Into The Old Farmer's Almanac Winter Forecast? El Niño is an important part of the picture, but it is not the entire picture. Some typical El Niño tendencies are reflected in parts of our 2026–2027 forecast. But our winter outlook also considers other large-scale signals, including ocean patterns, high-altitude winds, solar activity, the polar vortex, and conditions in the Indian Ocean. That combination helps explain why some regions may not follow what is considered a 'typical' El Niño pattern this winter. The best way to find out what we're forecasting for your winter is to look at your specific region. What Is a 'Super El Niño'? You've probably seen the phrase 'Super El Niño' in headlines lately. It certainly sounds dramatic. But 'Super El Niño' is not an official NOAA classification. Scientists generally describe El Niño events as weak, moderate, strong, or very strong based on how unusually warm the tropical Pacific becomes, among other factors. NOAA currently says there is a greater than 90% chance that the 2026–2027 El Niño will become very strong. So, could this become what headlines call a 'Super El Niño'? Perhaps. For now, very strong El Niño is the clearer, and less sensational, description. El Niño vs. La Niña: What's the Difference? El Niño and La Niña are opposite phases of the same Pacific Ocean climate cycle. No No Between El Niño and La Niña is ENSO -neutral, when tropical Pacific ocean and atmospheric conditions are closer to average. El Niño and La Niña events usually last about 9 to 12 months, although some can continue longer. They occur irregularly, generally every two to seven years. Why Is It Called El Niño? The name dates back centuries. Fishermen along the west coast of South America noticed that unusually warm coastal waters sometimes appeared around Christmastime. They called the phenomenon El Niño, Spanish for 'the little boy,' referring to the Christ child. The opposite, cooler phase eventually became known as La Niña, or 'the little girl.' Frequently Asked Questions About El Niño Does El Niño mean it will rain more? It can increase the chances of wetter weather in some regions, but not everywhere. An El Niño does not guarantee above-normal rainfall in any particular location, and regional conditions can differ considerably from the typical pattern. Does El Niño mean a warmer winter? Not everywhere. El Niño winters often favor milder temperatures across much of the United States, but regional conditions can differ considerably. For 2026–2027, our forecast calls for above-normal temperatures across much of the country, with colder-than-normal conditions from central New England through the Appalachians and Ohio Valley, as well as in Hawaii. Does a stronger El Niño mean stronger storms? Not necessarily. A powerful El Niño can increase the likelihood of certain weather patterns, but the strength of El Niño does not translate directly into the strength of individual winter storms. How long will the 2026–2027 El Niño last? NOAA currently expects El Niño to continue through winter and favors its persistence into spring 2027. Its strength and the eventual timing of its decline will become clearer as the season progresses. When was the last El Niño? The previous El Niño developed in 2023 and continued into 2024. El Niño and La Niña recur irregularly rather than following a set schedule. What Does El Niño Mean for Your Winter? El Niño gives meteorologists an important clue about the months ahead. It does not give us the entire answer. Winter weather ultimately comes from many forces interacting at once, and sometimes the atmosphere has a few surprises of its own.
