Red Sox congratulate Willson Contreras during his first year with the team

The Boston Red Sox have announced that first baseman Willson Contreras is the team's recipient of the 2026 Heart and Hustle Award. The award is presented annually by the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association to an active player who demonstrates a passion for the game and upholds its values, spirit and traditions. Across 125 games he has posted a .274 batting average, .384 on-base percentage, .900 OPS, 26 home runs and 79 RBIs. His OPS ranks second in the American League and his home run total is a career high. He has made 123 starts at first base since arriving from the St. Louis Cardinals this past offseason and has been one of the most consistent run producers in Boston's lineup all season. Contreras previously won the Cubs' Heart and Hustle Award back in 2022, making this his second time being recognized with the honor. He also earned his fourth career All-Star selection this season. Originally signed as an international free agent by the Chicago Cubs in 2009, Contreras spent seven seasons in Chicago before joining the Cardinals for three seasons. The Red Sox claimed him from St. Louis this past December. His current deal runs through 2027 with a club option for 2028. Contreras is currently on the injured list with a left hamstring strain. Boston sits at 79-65 in the AL East, and his return to the lineup could play a significant role in their postseason push over the final weeks of the regular season.
