Jesse Eisenberg is preparing to return to television with a new series for A24, with former Disney and Fox executive Peter Rice attached as an executive producer.
The untitled TV project is written, executive produced and set to be directed by Eisenberg. According to Deadline, the series is expected to be presented to potential buyers in the coming weeks under Eisenberg's deal with A24.
The story is based on one of Eisenberg's short stories and follows a young woman whose beliefs are challenged by new ideas and relationships. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the London Film Festival premiere of his latest film, The Debut, Eisenberg said the story explores the beginnings of the culture wars through the perspective of an 18-year-old girl in autumn 2002.
It remains unclear whether the series adapts the story of Harper Jablonski, a college freshman featured in Eisenberg's 2016 short-story collection, Bream Gives Me Hiccups.
Rice's involvement comes shortly after he was named Netflix's chief content officer. Although Netflix could become a potential buyer for the A24 series, Rice is not expected to take an active role in the project following his appointment. He is, however, likely to retain his executive producer credit.
Eisenberg initially gained attention as a child actor before joining the main cast of Fox's comedy-drama Get Real in 1999. He subsequently focused on films, earning an Academy Award nomination for playing Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network. He later won an Oscar for writing the 2024 film A Real Pain.
The Debut, starring Julianne Moore, marks Eisenberg's third feature as a writer-director, following When You Finish Saving the World and A Real Pain.
His previous television work includes the FX limited series Fleishman Is in Trouble, released in 2022. The new A24 project marks another step in his return to television, although a title, cast and release date have not yet been announced.
