TIRUPATI: In a tragic accident, a truck driver and vehicle cleaner were charred to death when a cement-laden lorry plunged into a gorge on the Guvvalacheruvu Ghat Road in Kadapa district.
The incident occurred when the driver reportedly lost control over the vehicle, suspected to be due to brake failure while negotiating the treacherous curves of the ghat road.
The lorry crashed through the protective guard wall and rolled down into the valley.
Upon falling into the gorge, the heavy vehicle burst into flames, engulfing both occupants before they could escape.
Due to the dense vegetation in the valley, the fire quickly spread to the surrounding forest area.
On receiving information from passersby, police personnel along with fire tenders rushed to the spot.
Firefighters doused the flames to prevent further spread into the forest terrain.
Police have launched search and recovery operations in the valley and registered a case to investigate the cause of the crash.
The bodies of the deceased were retrieved and they were identified as Subramanyam and Palani from Tamil Nadu.
Local residents have once again raised concerns over frequent accidents on the hazardous Guvvalacheruvu Ghat stretch, calling for enhanced safety measures and stricter speed enforcement.
