A complete standalone Year 9 English creative writing lesson designed for International Literacy Day 2026.
This 60-minute KS3 lesson guides students through the process of creating an original short story while explicitly teaching key creative writing skills throughout.
The lesson is structured around the idea that a character discovers something written that they were never supposed to see, giving students freedom to develop their story as a mystery, thriller, fantasy, dystopian, realistic or adventure piece.
Students are supported step by step through idea generation, character development, effective openings, creating curiosity, showing emotion, sentence control, precise vocabulary, dialogue, subtext, tension, narrative twists, endings and editing.
The resource includes 30 carefully structured slides with regular opportunities for students to write directly onto the lesson space, making it ideal for tutoring, intervention, small-group teaching or whole-class delivery.
The lesson includes:
International Literacy Day discussion and reflection creative story prompts character planning modelled writing examples comparison of effective and less effective openings explicit teaching of suspense and curiosity show-not-tell practice sentence-length and pacing activities vocabulary improvement tasks dialogue and subtext teaching structured writing checkpoints narrative twist planning effective ending techniques editing and redrafting

The lesson is designed to feel mature and appropriate for secondary students, with a calm, minimal visual style and no cartoon imagery.
Students build one complete piece of creative writing across the session rather than completing disconnected activities, while teachers can also use the lesson to informally assess writing confidence, vocabulary, sentence construction, punctuation, organisation and creative ideas.
