Episode 22 Recap – The Block has reached the halfway mark, but there was little time for the contestants to celebrate on Monday night, with Guest Suite Week bringing budget headaches, a change of foreperson, Rick leaving the site to recover and Tayla making a major call about her real estate agent. After the drama of Sunday's Room Reveals, the five teams were handed their next challenge: complete a guest bedroom and ensuite in the same week. It is the first time this season the Blockheads have been required to deliver both a bedroom and bathroom together, with a suggested budget of $30,000. - Advertisement - Before work could properly begin, Scott Cam had some personnel changes to announce. Dan is taking a short break from the site to spend time with Dani and baby Fletcher, with Leonie Akhidenor stepping into the foreperson role. There was also reinforcements for House 5, where Rick has been dealing with an infected knee. With Rick ordered to rest, Block All-Star and builder Spence arrived to work alongside Tayla. Spence, who competed on The Block with wife Kerrie in 2018, has 30 years of experience and has also worked behind the scenes with Block builders in recent seasons. Tayla was hoping the experienced builder could help keep House 5 moving while her dad recovered, although Wyatt had some ominous advice for the newcomer. 'Good luck and be prepared to do everything.' - Advertisement - The Blockheads inspect their rivals Before turning their attention to Guest Suite Week, it was time for the contestants to inspect the previous week's living, dining and alfresco spaces during the Domain Open For Inspection. Fresh from their first room victory, House 1's Adam and Jolene were given plenty of praise for their winning spaces, although their colour choices and giant mirror did not win everyone over. One contestant declared: 'I will never use these colours.' House 3's Lisa and Rosco also impressed their competitors, while House 5's Tayla and Rick received praise for their alfresco area. There were questions around the choices made by House 4's Courtney and Sev, particularly their layout, including the seating nook positioned behind their sofa, as well as how much restraint they had shown with their spending. Tayla's pizza oven fireplace was another feature that failed to win over everyone. But the toughest assessment was reserved for House 2's Chantel and Wyatt. - Advertisement - Their rivals were unimpressed by the neutral styling and, more significantly, the decision to orient the lounge towards neighbouring houses rather than the sea. With the television already built into the wall, changing the layout could become an expensive exercise. Adam did not hold back. 'They have totally wrecked their upstairs room.' 'I just can't believe they've screwed up their entire house.' Guest Suite Week begins With inspections finished, attention shifted downstairs as each team began planning a bedroom and ensuite. For House 5, Tayla was preparing another distinctive design despite the financial pressure surrounding her build. Her plan included neutral travertine, a green marble vanity, a tea and coffee nook and bold green wallpaper. Even Tayla acknowledged the design was not exactly restrained. 'It's a lot.' The wallpaper also brought back memories for Spence, whose own feature wallpaper during his 2018 season attracted a difficult response from the judges. But Spence's bigger immediate job was getting the construction program under control while Rick was unavailable. Scotty confronts Tayla over her spending Design was only part of the problem at House 5. Scott Cam arrived to discuss Tayla's spending after the team blew through the previous week's suggested budget. House 5 spent $49,693.30 during Living, Dining and Alfresco Week against a suggested budget of $20,000. The issue for Scott was not simply the overall figure, but that cash had been spent on items when sponsor vouchers and Block Bucks were available. Going through the receipts, Scott found $349 had been spent on two cushions and two pots. 'Pillows and two pots, $349, cash!' 'You could have got them from Freedom.' Then came another purchase: an oil bottle costing $184. Spence backed Scott's argument by asking whether the purchases had ultimately made a difference to the result. 'Did that win you the room?' The message for Tayla was clear: with the competition now at its halfway point, House 5 could not continue burning through cash when alternatives were available. Adam and Jolene try to rein things in House 1's Adam and Jolene were also attempting to bring their spending under control after an expensive previous week. That did not mean they were abandoning ambitious design choices. Their guest suite plans included burgundy and blush pink tiles, a pink basin, wallpaper, artwork and bedding. At Reece, however, Jolene received another warning from Scott. The couple had only $8000 remaining in their Reece allowance, around half the amount available to some of their rivals. Scott encouraged Jolene to look towards more cost-effective fittings as the couple tried to protect what remained of their budget. Their intention for the week was to lean more heavily on sponsor vouchers rather than continue spending cash. Chantel and Wyatt put the budget first While other houses wrestled with the temptation to spend, House 2's Chantel and Wyatt were sticking to a strategy that has already paid off several times. The pair have won the weekly budgeting prize three times and were prepared to prioritise financial discipline over chasing another room win. 'It doesn't matter if we don't win rooms.' Wyatt was considerably more ambitious about where that strategy could eventually take them. 'We're going to win the entire show.' Their guest suite was planned as another smaller, neutral space, with the pair looking to make maximum use of their available Block Bucks. Wyatt was also looking for ways to gain time on the construction schedule. His plan involved having Truecore design and supply the steel frame for their shower nib wall early. He then borrowed the Cursio brothers' truck to collect it, allowing him to install the frame ahead of schedule. For Chantel and Wyatt, avoiding wasted time on Monday was another part of keeping control of both the build and their spending. Lisa and Rosco keep things simple House 3's Lisa and Rosco were taking a similar financial approach. Rather than pouring cash into a downstairs guest suite, the pair intended to rely on Block Bucks wherever possible. Lisa questioned how much influence the room would ultimately have on a buyer. 'Nobody buys a house because of a guest suite downstairs.' Their plan was for a relatively simple bedroom containing a wardrobe, study nook and Grafico wall treatment. The ensuite would continue that restrained approach with timber cabinetry and travertine tiles. But construction and budgets briefly became secondary as Lisa and Rosco faced an emotional goodbye. Their two-year-old son Lando, who had been visiting for the weekend, was returning to Perth with Rosco's parents. For Lisa, the separation was difficult despite knowing why she and Rosco had committed to the competition. 'We're doing it from him.' 'It's such a short part of his life, he's not going to remember it, but it is hard.' The farewell also hit Chantel, who has been missing her own children. After spending time with Lando, the usually stoic mum-of-three retreated to her car and became emotional over being away from her family. Courtney and Sev reveal their secret weapon While several teams were focused primarily on cutting costs, House 4's Courtney and Sev were making one of the most significant strategic changes of the week. The pair decided to reverse the position of their room entry and wardrobe. The alteration was designed to allow the plumbing configuration to support an integrated kitchenette complete with a bar fridge and sink. Rather than simply creating another bedroom and bathroom, Courtney and Sev were planning a more self-contained guest suite. Their design included a king bed, custom bedhead, Grafico wallpaper and micro cement, with an ensuite intended to continue the style established in their winning main bathroom. The challenge was delivering those additions while maintaining control of their budget. Tayla changes real estate agents The biggest decision at House 5, however, had nothing to do with wallpaper, marble or construction. With Rick away from the site recovering, Tayla met real estate agent Ash Martin and decided to replace Mark from Buxton, the agent who had previously been locked in with Rick. It meant Tayla had to end the existing arrangement without her dad being there. She summed up the uncomfortable conversation afterwards. 'That was scarier than divorcing my husband.' There was another complication: Rick did not know what she had done. Tayla decided to keep the change from her father while he was resting and recovering. Adam and Jolene enjoy the spoils While their competitors were already deep into another demanding week, Adam and Jolene had one reward left to enjoy following their Living, Dining and Alfresco victory. The South Australian farmers headed away on their Chery winners' getaway at Jackalope, followed by dinner with Scott at Doot Doot Doot. The experience was unfamiliar territory for the pair, including a menu featuring smoked eel and caviar. It was a considerably more relaxed way to begin Guest Suite Week than the one unfolding back on site. Rick heads home to recover Back at House 5, there was eventually an update from Rick. His knee problem meant his absence would be longer than simply sitting out a day or two on site. Rick told the group he was packing up and heading home to recover until he was well enough to return. That left Tayla facing Guest Suite Week without her usual teammate, but with experienced Block builder Spences tepping into the breach. At the halfway point of the competition, the pressure was increasingly moving beyond simply producing the best-looking room. Cash reserves, sponsor allowances, construction schedules and decisions that could affect auction day were becoming just as important.
