Kevin Stefanski Reveals His Blinders-On Approach Ahead of Browns Season Opener

Kevin Stefanski is not letting the Atlanta Falcons get ahead of themselves, and with the Falcons finally set to open the season, the head coach is taking a simple approach: focus on the game directly in front of him and nothing beyond it. That mindset is especially interesting given how much attention surrounded Stefanski's first season with the Falcons. After being fired by the Cleveland Browns despite two Coach of the Year awards, he knows better than most how quickly expectations can shift in this league. Kevin Stefanski And The Atlanta Falcons Are Keeping Their Focus On Week 1 Stefanski is making sure the Falcons don't get caught looking too far down the road, with the season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers finally here, Stefanski has no interest in discussing what could happen in Week 2, how the quarterback situation might develop later in the year, or what Atlanta's season could eventually become. "I'm a blinders person. I see Week 1 in front of me. After this one, then we'll start on the next one. I don't think it's fair to go past this week on anything related to our football team." That approach is more than a standard coach-speak answer for Stefanski. He has already experienced how quickly an NFL season can turn, and how little control a coach ultimately has over what comes next. Stefanski was fired by the Browns after the 2025 season, even though he had signed a multi-year extension with general manager Andrew Berry in 2024. Cleveland told him three days before the season finale that he planned to move on, giving him enough time to prepare his family before the news became official. He did not have to wait long for another opportunity. The Falcons hired him just 12 days after his final game with the Browns, making him one of the most sought-after coaching candidates available. Now, his attention is on a Falcons team that still has plenty of questions to answer. The biggest one entering Week 1 was at QB, the Falcons waited until the final stretch of the offseason to settle on Tua Tagovailoa over Michael Penix Jr., with Penix's recovery from his injury ultimately playing a major role in the decision. Stefanski has also been careful not to look too far beyond that first game. Penix is expected to be inactive while he continues working his way back, leaving Tua to take the first snap of the Stefanski era in the Steelers. After spending the end of his Browns tenure knowing his future had already been decided, the Falcons coach is taking the opposite approach in Atlanta.
