A 70-Year-Old New Jersey Sub Chain Spotted Opening First Vancouver Outpost in Kits

A reel of a Coming Soon window on West 4th picked up 834 likes in a day, and the comments turned into an argument about American chains. Instagram creator Moonpieeats spotted Jersey Mike's Subs signage up at 1864 West 4th Avenue in Kitsilano, the corner unit Purebread closed on March 29 after less than two years. It will be the chain's first Vancouver store. It is not the first in BC though. Jersey Mike's opened in Kelowna on July 29 and has a Chilliwack store on Vedder Road, so Kitsilano is the first stop in Metro Vancouver. There is no opening date. The window wrap does the pitch itself: 'Sliced and Grilled to Order,' a Since 1956 badge, and a sub the length of the glass. Jersey Mike's is a New Jersey chain founded in 1956, and its whole thing is slicing the meat and cheese in front of you. Order it 'Mike's Way' and it comes with onions, lettuce, tomatoes, vinegar, oil and spices. Photo credits: Jersey Mike's The Canadian rollout is run by Redberry Restaurants, the Toronto-area operator that also runs Burger King and Taco Bell locations, under a January 2024 agreement to open 300 Jersey Mike's across Canada by 2034. As of September 6, the chain's locator counts 40 open in Canada, with 15 more listed as coming soon from Vancouver to Whitby. The unit has its own short history. Purebread opened at 1864 West 4th on June 1, 2024, and closed on March 29, 2026. 'After almost two wonderful years of getting to know you, we've made the difficult decision to close our Purebread West 4th location on 29th March 2026,' the bakery wrote at the time, adding that the staff would carry on at its other shops. Purebread still runs Kitsilano Broadway, Mount Pleasant, Gastown, YVR, Squamish and Whistler, so the corner was the one that did not work. That is the room this store is opening into. Jersey Mike's Kitsilano joins other upcoming Vancouver spots including Danbo Express at UBC, Unveil Coffee Roasters and Crepe Spot.
