KP launches online tracking for miners' scholarship applications

Shangla - The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has introduced an online facility enabling applicants for the Mines Labour Scholarship to check the status of their applications. Under the new system, applicants can track the progress of their scholarship applications through an online portal by entering their Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) number. Officials said applicants could check the status of their applications by visiting app.cmlw.gkp.pk and entering their CNIC number. The current status of the submitted application would then be displayed on the portal. The authorities have advised applicants to use the online facility to monitor the progress and status of their scholarship applications. Civil society representatives in Shangla welcomed the facility, describing the Mines Labour Scholarship as an important source of educational support for the children of mine workers. They called for further simplifying the scholarship process and making it more transparent and efficient so that deserving students could receive financial assistance without unnecessary delays. They said the economy of Shangla and the livelihoods of a large number of families were directly or indirectly linked to mining and mineral resources. However, workers in the mining sector continued to face a range of challenges, particularly in relation to occupational safety and welfare. According to local representatives, a number of mine workers had suffered serious injuries in accidents and some had been left permanently disabled. They said affected workers and their families faced difficulties in meeting medical expenses, finding alternative employment and financing the education of their children. The representatives urged the government to formulate a comprehensive policy for injured and disabled mine workers and ensure its effective implementation. They also called for stronger safety measures at mining sites and demanded adequate financial assistance, medical treatment and rehabilitation services for workers injured in mine accidents and those left permanently disabled. They further called for an expansion of educational stipends and other welfare schemes for the children of mine workers. Residents urged the provincial government and relevant departments to strengthen mine labour welfare programmes in mining districts, including Shangla, and ensure that deserving workers and their families had timely access to available government facilities.
