‘A wonderful ambassador for Sligo': Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council Cllr Dara Mulvey extends his congratulations to Mona McSharry following silver medal success

Following Mona McSharry's heroics in Paris on Wednesday evening that saw her claim a silver medal in the 100m breastroke final at the European Aquatic Championships, Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council Cllr Dara Mulvey has extended his congratulations to the Grange swimmer. Paying tribute to one of Sligo's greatest sporting competitors, Cathaoirleach Mulvey said, 'On behalf of Sligo County Council and the people of County Sligo, I warmly congratulate Mona McSharry, Freeperson of Sligo, on her outstanding achievement in winning a Silver medal in the 100m Breaststroke Final at the European Aquatic Championships in Paris on Wednesday evening.' She continues to be a wonderful ambassador for Sligo and an inspiration to young athletes across the county and the country.' Cathaoirleach Mulvey noted that Mona will be hoping to add to her medal haul when she competes in the 50m and 200m breaststroke events saying she will have the full support of her home county as she bids to do so. 'We are immensely proud of Mona's success and wish her the very best of luck in her upcoming 200m and 50m Breaststroke events. Everyone in Sligo will be cheering her on.' Having contemplated calling time on her swimming career after the Paris Olympics, Mona acknowledged when speaking at County Hall in April that she has rediscovered her love for the sport saying she is fully focused on preparations for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028. 'It was hard to look at after Paris and set your sights on something four years away. I wasn't really sure if I wanted to commit to it, but now we are a little bit more than two years out and it seems like a pretty short two years, it's going to fly by so I'm definitely starting to see the path to progression and building towards that.'
