I am so happy the African Union has finally got its act together and made the world vote to change the map. Sudan is burning. Congo is bleeding. The Sahel is losing people every week to a security collapse nobody has a plan for. South Africa spent its summer arguing about migrants. Angola, and the list keeps going. But at last the continent has an unenforceable rule about cartography, so I suppose we can all relax. If you missed it, here is what actually happened. On Friday the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution called Correct the Map, put forward by African Union member states along with the Bahamas and driven by a campaign that Togo led. It passed 164 to 1. The United States was the only country to vote against it. Six others abstained. The resolution asks the world to move away from the Mercator projection, drawn up in the 16th century, and toward something like the Equal Earth projection, which shows the continents closer to their real relative size. The grievance underneath it is real enough. You can fit China, most of Europe and the United States inside Africa, and the standard map does not remotely look that way. I have seen that graphic circulate for years. There is also a technical reason it happens. Take a sphere and flatten it and you will lose something, every single time. You get to choose which distortion you accept, and there is no version where everybody comes out looking correct. So you can argue Mercator was chosen with malice, and you may well be right, but even if I concede that point entirely, I am left asking the same question. So what? Right now we have bigger fish to fry. And notice what Africa proved it can unify around when it finally unifies around something. The resolution is not binding. If France decides its school textbooks will keep the old map, what exactly is the continent going to do about it? Invade? If Washington keeps printing Mercator on every wall in every classroom, there is no mechanism on this earth that compels it to stop. The country that objected outright is the one whose textbooks matter most. So this is tokenism, and tokenism has a cost. Do you think the refugee sleeping in a camp tonight has an opinion about map projections? Here is the part that actually stings. The whole exercise proves to the rest of the world that Africa still has no leverage, because leverage is the one thing this resolution demonstrably does not produce. You do not vote your way into leverage. You build it, and then people come to you. Imagine the African Union doing something else with the same convening power. Imagine it unifying the continent behind a single export standard, so that every buyer on earth has to deal with every African country, small or large, on identical terms. We export in this manner and not that one. We keep this, we process that here, we price it this way, and all of it set in our own interest. Then look at what is happening instead. America buys fertilizer from Morocco and uses that relationship as weight against Europe. Morocco gets marked as a favourite. Kenya has been marked the same way at other moments. Meanwhile the Alliance of Sahel States and Ibrahim Traore are cast as the villains of the story, and a coup attempt lands in Niger. Ethiopia, Sudan, proxy behaviour everywhere you look. That is the whole game. State by state, favourite against villain, and it only works because there is no common standard to hide behind. A continent that negotiates as fifty four separate desperate sellers will always be played, and everybody involved knows it. With one standard, the conversation changes completely. The world needs what is under African soil, and it needs it more urgently every quarter that AI infrastructure expands. That is leverage. That is the position from which you say to Washington, change the map or here are the consequences, and someone actually listens. Instead, Europe gets to vote and look virtuous. Yes of course, change the map, wonderful idea. And the CFA franc stays exactly where it is. The predatory arrangements stay. The extraction machinery stays. All of it stays, while the press release says we are part of the solution. Then it comes back around. The next time the continent asks for something with teeth, the answer is already written. We gave you the map, did we not? Virtue costs them nothing. Sovereignty is the thing that costs them, and that is the vote Africa never gets to hold. My question is not why the world humoured us on this. My question is why the African Union keeps reaching for the thing that changes nothing when its people need the thing that changes everything. Thanks so much for supporting The Subi Shop. ✌️Peace
