Now in a featured interview with Sports Illustrated, Johnson provides a devastating revelation. In an interview with Matt Verderame, Johnson believes that the game of football may have contributed to his diagnosis. He was not predisposed to the disease, but after talking with experts, they brought up the game he loved."I don't think anyone can say with 100% certainty what caused my ALS," Johnson says. "Mine isn't genetic, so there isn't an obvious answer. But I will say this. When we were first trying to figure out what was wrong, we saw a lot of neurologists, and almost every one of them brought up my football career." Johnson then expressed hope that more research will be done to draw a possible link. "After hearing that over and over," says Johnson, "it's hard not to believe football may have played a role. At the same time, I loved the game. Football gave me opportunities I never would have had otherwise, and I'm grateful for everything it brought into my life. My hope is that we continue investing in research so future players and families have answers that we don't have today." Johnson played 10 seasons from 2008 to 2017. In 2009, he rushed for 2,006 yards, earned the nickname "CJ2K," and won Offensive Player of the Year. Since his diagnosis, the NFL has brought back the famed Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness. ALS, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a disease that attacks nerve cells. Eventually, it can deprive a person of the ability to speak, swallow, and breathe. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) approxmiately 30, 000 to 35,000 Americans have ALS at any given time.
