SiriusXM has promoted longtime executive Sean Gibbons to senior vice president and chief product and technology officer, consolidating responsibility for product development, engineering and technology strategy across SiriusXM and Pandora under a leader who has spent more than two decades with the company.
Gibbons will report to CEO Jennifer Witz and join SiriusXM's Executive Leadership Team. His responsibilities will include product strategy and development, technology platforms and engineering, automotive and streaming distribution partnerships, and advertising technology.
The expanded role puts Gibbons in charge of coordinating technology across SiriusXM's satellite, broadcast and streaming infrastructure as the company develops its next generation of connected in-car and digital listening experiences.
His priorities will include advancing SiriusXM with 360L, developing future in-vehicle products and shaping the long-term technology roadmap supporting the company's satellite, broadcast and streaming platforms. He will also oversee efforts to apply artificial intelligence to personalization, content discovery and customer service.
'Sean has helped shape SiriusXM through some of our most important product and technology transformations, including the development and successful rollout of SiriusXM with 360L,' Witz said. She cited his experience bringing together product teams, technology and external partnerships as SiriusXM works to improve customer experience and support growth.
Gibbons joined Sirius in 2000, before the company's first satellite launch, and has held leadership positions spanning product management, engineering, automotive technology, streaming, content technology and strategic partnerships.
During his tenure, he established SiriusXM's first formal Product Management organization. He later founded and led its first Streaming organization, extending SiriusXM beyond its satellite radio base and onto mobile, web and connected-home platforms.
Most recently, Gibbons led SiriusXM's Automotive organization. In that role, he brought together product, user experience, engineering and automaker partnerships to develop the company's in-vehicle products and strengthen relationships with automotive manufacturers.
His work has included SiriusXM's transition toward connected, software-defined vehicle environments and hybrid services combining satellite and internet connectivity.
That hybrid architecture is central to the company's product strategy. Satellite provides broad coverage and reliable content distribution, while internet connectivity enables on-demand programming, personalization, interactive features and more frequent software-driven changes to the user experience.
SiriusXM with 360L combines those capabilities in connected vehicles. Gibbons will now oversee further development of that platform while coordinating the broader technology systems required to deliver consistent experiences across cars, phones, web applications and connected devices.
'We can pair the reach and reliability of satellite with the flexibility of streaming and the intelligence of AI to make it easier for people to discover what they love, stay connected wherever they listen and participate more deeply in the content and moments that matter to them,' Gibbons said.
AI will form another part of that operating roadmap. SiriusXM plans to use the technology to improve recommendations and discovery across a large catalog of music, talk, news, sports and podcasts, while also applying it to customer service.
Gibbons will additionally oversee advertising technology, connecting his role to SiriusXM's ad-supported businesses. The company's portfolio includes Pandora, its podcast network and advertising operations through SiriusXM Media and AdsWizz alongside its flagship subscription service.
SiriusXM reaches approximately 255 million monthly listeners across its platforms. Its combination of subscription audio, streaming, podcasts, advertising technology, automotive relationships and spectrum assets creates a technology environment that spans multiple distribution systems and business models.
Bringing those responsibilities under a single product and technology executive gives SiriusXM a more integrated structure for managing how content moves across those platforms and how listeners interact with it.
Gibbons' promotion places an executive who has worked across SiriusXM's satellite, streaming and automotive businesses in charge of that integration. His mandate will center on connecting those assets more closely while advancing the in-car experience, expanding AI-driven personalization and building the technology foundation for SiriusXM's next generation of audio products.
